SOS Children’s Villages International is the umbrella organisation for the global federation of SOS Children’s Villages. As a non-governmental social development organisation we support children without parental care and families in difficult living conditions through services in care, education, health and emergency relief, and we advocate for children’s rights. We work in 135 countries and territories, reaching over one million children, young people, families and caregivers each year.

 

Mission

The Global Gender Advisor fosters collaboration between the different layers of the federation on gender topics to mainstream gender equality.

S/he specifically supports selected countries in implementing gender mainstreaming and collects their learnings. The Global Gender Advisor brings together relevant stakeholders on a regular basis for exchange and steering and presents results to the governing bodies of the organisation. S/he will also share information with - and support - SOS Member Associations globally when requested.  S/he acts as a link to other organisations and partners to learn about external gender-related topics and bring learnings back into our organisation.

 

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Act as key account responsible for gender topics for leadership and governing bodies of SOS Children’s Villages International
  • Establish and maintain consultation on gender with other functions and regions of the organisation
  • Support all countries that have gender actions in their 2020 strategies in implementing gender mainstreaming:
    • Support countries in setting-up gender-sensitive programmes
    • Collect and share lessons learned on gender equality to build knowledge and capacity
    • Assist with quality assurance of (IPD) proposals upon request
  • Support Human Resources & Organisational Development (HROD) in mainstreaming gender equality measures:
    • Promote and advocate for strong gender (policy) HR principles including gender equitable work practises
    • Establish accountability mechanisms to measure progress towards gender equality in the organization and achievement of the targets set

 

Required Profile:

  • Specific substantive knowledge on and understanding of gender equality issues
  • Experience in applied gender equality work, preferably in an international setting and in programmes working with child care
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and experience in working in an international setting
  • Proactive approach to work with initiative and ability to autonomously develop and follow a concrete work plan
  • Good time management skills and ability to prioritize assignments and allocate appropriate time for completing work. Strictly observes deadlines
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively in multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environments with sensitivity and respect for diversity
  • Ability to build and maintain good relations and networks with member associations, regional offices, internal stakeholders and external partners

 

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Gender Studies, International Development, Public Administration, Economics, Political Sciences, Social Sciences or related field. Some specialized study on gender and gender issues must be part of academic background.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in development work for national and international organisations. Experience in developing and designing a gender strategy, and managing its implementation.
  • Experience in capacity development and setting up gender training concepts would be an asset
  • Experience in managing content related projects and leading related team members with proven ability to advocate for gender issues at senior level
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English; ability to communicate and present in leadership meetings; Spanish and/or French an asset
