National Professional Officer (Communications), Position no 387295

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The objective of WHO's Polio Eradication Programme is to eradicate polio globally in accordance with World Health Assembly (WHA) resolutions, and fully implement the Global Polio Eradication and End Game Strategic Plan in conjunction with GPEI partners and Member States. The Regional Polio Programme has as its immediate objectives, stopping polio transmission in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and protecting polio-free countries in the Region from importation of wild poliovirus. Upon eradication, to achieve to destroy or safely contain polioviruses in the Region.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

- To organize press briefings and media visits, conduct trainings and briefing sessions for journalists, write and translate press releases and other communication materials into Dari and Pashto as well as respond to any media enquiries.

- Draft and prepare official documents and reports (including newsletters, web articles, fact sheets, program updates, speeches for senior personnel, bulletins, brochures) and perform any needed translation into Dari and Pashto.

- Develop content for social media in English, Dari and Pashto (Facebook/Twitter).

- Organize events, trainings and workshops.

- Visit WHO project sites to take photographs and collect material for human interest stories and articles as well as managing storage of photographs.

- Handle the development of multimedia projects.

- Develop/update the WHO website by drafting web articles.

- Provide general administrative support, such as scheduling, taking notes, and project tracking.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: University Degree in communications, journalism, international relations, politics or a related field
Desirable\:

Experience

Essential\: At least 2 years of relevant experience working in the field of communications and external relations
Desirable\: Previous experience working in a communications role for a UN organization

Skills

- Excellent drafting, writing and editing skills in English, Dari and Pashto.

- Knowledge of photography, basic graphic design and use of social media.

- Good organizational skills with good understanding of health issues, particularly polio Demonstrated ability to work in teams with capacity to work under pressure and a high degree of independence).

 

Other Skills (e.g. IT)

 

Proficiency in MS Office and knowledge of  Publisher is essential.  Knowledge of PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign desirable.

 

Strong knowledge and understanding of organizational use of social media; photography skills.

REMUNERATION

Remuneration comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 45,101 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
