UN VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT AZER000021--UN Youth Volunteer in Private Sector Engagement The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long- established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive.

Living Conditions

Situated in a strategic place, Azerbaijan shares borders with Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Iran and the East of the country is bound by a length of the Caspian Sea coastline. In addition, the small exclave of Nakhchivan (only accessible by airplane) is surrounded by Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea and of the Caucasus region. Baku is located 28 meters below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world. Security in Azerbaijan is fairly calm. There are no threats from armed conflict or terrorism. The level of serious crime in Baku is low. The winter season brings some snow, particularly in the northern mountains and summers are relatively hot and humid in the capital. Baku has a subway train system and also public buses which are safe to be used. There are many taxi companies operating, several of which have been assessed and approved by the UNDSS. The security level by the UN Department of Safety and Security is minimal (level 1) in Baku.

For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. Task description

Under the direct the supervision of the UNICEF Country Representative the UN Volunteer will:

Support the conceptual planning of a Child-Friendly Business Network in Azerbaijan;

Undertake an initial mapping of national private sector engagement on child rights issues and child-friendly business practices, compiling a country overview;

Work with programme colleagues to define and identify existing good practices and gaps in child-friendly practices within the national private sector;

Work with programme, other UN and government partners to support the development of draft criteria and process for accrediting national corporations as child-friendly;

Support engagement of national government partners to secure endorsement of the initiative within government;

Support the identification of potential “first round” corporate partners to champion the initiative;

Work with advocacy and external communication colleagues to develop a roll-out strategy for the initiative.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:- Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerismby reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNVactivities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day)- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms ofvolunteerism in the host country- Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they areundertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities- Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNVpublications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.- Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, orencourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV OnlineVolunteering service whenever technically possible. Results/Expected Outputs

A comprehensive national mapping of existing private sector child-friendly business practices and gaps;

An agreed set of criteria and process for accrediting private sector actors with child-friendly status, approved by relevant government entities;

An agreed list of potential private sector partners to kick-start the initiative;

A communication and engagement campaign to promote public and private sector interest in the initiative nationally; Age, Gender, and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment;

A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in, and capacities developed.

Conditions of Service:

11 Apr 2018 Page 3 of 4 The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment.

Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance

from the place of recruitment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost

of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included ) and final repatriation (if applicable).

Furthermore, in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, a Well-Being Differential

(WBD) on a monthly basis will be provided.
