Organizational Setting\:
The Conference, Council and Protocol Affairs Division (CSG) is responsible for providing liaison between the Organization and its Membership on Governing Body, as well as conference and protocol services. The Conference, Council and Government Relations Branch (CSGC) carries out secretariat functions for the Conference and Council and other Governing Bodies, facilitates relations with Members and ensures the despatch of official correspondence between the Organization and its Members.
 
Reporting Lines
The Consultant will report to the Director, CSG and will work under the day-to-day guidance of the Conference Officer.
 
Technical Focus
Support to Governing Body Secretariat functions, preparation of draft documents pertaining to governance matters.
 
Tasks and responsibilities
 
  • Support the development and preparation of reports and papers on topics related to governance matters for submission to Governing Bodies sessions;
  • Review reports of Conference, Council and Council Committees sessions, identify issues to be addressed for inclusion in documents to be submitted to Governing Bodies for decision-making purposes;
  • Support the production of papers and other products in response to senior management requirements, review and edit information to ensure required quality, relevance and accuracy under tight deadlines;
  • Contribute to the enhancement and development of the content reflected in the Governing and Statutory Bodies Website (GSBWS), identify the need for improvements and coordinate ongoing design and development;
  • Liaise with counterparts in Divisional units to identify activities for dissemination to Permanent Representatives, and promote increased collaboration to ensure appropriate use of the Members Gateway;
  • Expand (i) the use of social media as a support to FAO Governing Body work and (ii) the Common Rome-Based Agencies (RBA) calendar;
  • Draft preliminary procedural notes for meetings, and other preparatory measures;
  • Carry out research and analysis on policies and trends related to governance;
  • Review and respond to requests from internal and external parties for guidance and clarification on governance procedures related to the preparation and conduct of statutory and other body meetings, ensuring conformity to the policy of the Organization;
  • Support the organization and conduct of Informal Meetings with FAO Regional Groups; prepare talking points and summary notes on a wide range of governance matters;
  • Perform other related duties, as required.
 

 
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
 
 
Minimum Requirements
  • University Degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, International Relations, Law or a related field
  • Working knowledge (Level C) of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge (Level B) of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian
  • At least two years of relevant experience in international relations, providing support to national or international bodies, national or international secretariats

  • Analytical skills and ability to draft and edit documents and/or correspondence

  • Extent and relevance of experience in the drafting and editing of official correspondence in a government or an international organization
  • Extent and relevance of experience in the UN Common System is considered a strong asset
  • Extent of language skills
