Organizational Setting

FAO in partnership with the Government of Moldova is implementing a Technical Co-operation Project (TCP/MOL/3608) - Strengthening the capacity of smallholders in berry production.  The overall objective of this project is to strengthen the capacity of smallholders in berry production in Moldova through introduction and demonstration of the modern berries production technologies, and trainings of the national extension service providers, and farmers.  

 

Applications are invited for the position of an International Horticulture Specialist (IHS) to provide the technical support towards the implementation of the TCP/MOL/3608. This consultancy work has a duration of 80 working days over 15 months with four technical missions to Moldova of about 60 days.  

 

Reporting Lines

The International Horticulture Specialist will work under overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Moldova, the technical supervision of the Plant Production and Protection Division (AGP), and FAO-REU Plant Production and Protection Officer.  

 

 

Technical Focus

Horticultural production research and management, Training of Trainers and Farmers’ Field Schools, and development of extension materials

 

Tasks and responsibilities

The International Horticulture Specialist will be responsible for the followings tasks;

  • review and assess the berry production industry in Moldova
  • facilitate workshops and stakeholder consultations to discuss project initiatives and implementation arrangement
  • contribute to the preparation of the detailed work plan for the duration of the project;
  • review current propagation techniques and suggest innovations as required;
  • identify locally available technologies and research results applicable in the project area for berry improvement and promote their effective transfer to the farmers;
  • support the identification and plans for the three pilot demonstration project sites
  • identify the applicable varieties in the country (2-3 crops) and a set of the varieties which can be used as a trial
  • prepare the list of necessary equipment, material and supplies to be purchased, prepare technical specifications and arrange for their procurement;
  • advice the establishment and management of pilot demonstration sites, data gathering and analysis; 
  • conduct trainings for technical staff and farmers on modern berry production techniques and management;
  • ;provide technical advice on berry rootstock and mother plantations establishment and management as well as nursery;
  • develop farm production manual and guidelines for berry production and management, and extension materials
  • supervise the work of the national consultant and formulate technical recommendations as required;
  • and perform any other duties deemed necessary for the successful execution of the project;


 

 

 

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

 

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced University Degree in horticulture, agriculture sciences or natural resource management
  • At least 5 years’ experience in berry fruit production and management
  • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO languages (French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and Arabic) for Consultants. Working knowledge of English for PSAs.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Extent and relevance experience in implementation fruit production research and pilot demonstrations management and conducting Training of Trainers, and Farmers Field Schools
  • Demonstrated strong technical and advisory and communication, team building, computer and report writing skills.
  • Ability to speak the local language will be considered an advantage
  • Some technical skills on fruit production research and management, pilot demonstration and farmers field schools and working with communities
  • Excellent communication skills in English and strong computer, report writing, and presentation skills.
