Background

The Radio Room in Sulaimaniyah is to provide safety and security for all UNSMS personnel by effectively monitoring radio and other telephonic communications systems in case of an emergency. The Radio Operators provide a variety of services including vehicle tracking, radio checks, transmitting and receiving radio messages, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain radio contact with all radio users and vehicles operating on the UN Radio Networks under his/her responsibility, and other Radio Rooms;
  • Ensure that all radio network users comply with the call-signs and the radio operating procedures.
  • Carry out mandated daily checks at pre-defined times to ensure that the UN staff is safe and is contactable at any given point of time;
  • Track all the UN vehicles/convoys travelling outside of city limits and within AOR to ensure safety and security of the UN personnel in the vehicles, and their whereabouts known to the relevant authorities at any given time;
  • Maintain and operate communication systems including HF & VHF radios, satellite telephones, mobile & landline telephones, GPS tracking systems and the Internet;
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all sent and received messages through the Radio Room Communication System;
  • Provide timely responses to email queries received on the Radio Room email account;
  • Document emergency radio call(s) and immediately inform the FSCO;
  • Check the health of the telecommunication networks on a periodic basis, and inform the FSCO and the ETC about the faults in the established networks. Shall undertake all necessary actions to rectify the faults to provide smooth Radio Room services;
  • Liaise with other UN Radio Rooms within KR and HQ in Baghdad to maintain contact information as required;
  • Provide daily and weekly Radio Room reports to Erbil OPS;
  • Respond promptly and disseminate advisories to UN agencies/staff regarding incidents that may affect the safety and security of UN personnel and properties;
  • Continuous information sharing must be ensured by all involved personnel as the situation is monitored and additional information is gathered;
  • All incident developments and implemented measures must be informed to the Radio Room Operator in Sulaimaniyah who maintains an electronic incident log

  • Good knowledge in the telecommunication operations and procedures and high standard computer literacy;
  • Good communication skills, ability to provide short briefings and communications clearly;
  • High sense of discretion and integrity;
  • Ability to multi task, and respond in a timely fashion to demanding job requirements;
  • Understanding of the value of the UNDSS team and AFPs in fluffing team’s goals and objectives.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • High School Certificate or Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum 4 years of progressively relevant work experience in telecommunications/radio operations, information technology or other related field of work, and 1 year of relevant experience with bachelor’s degree;
  • Experience in usage of computers equipment.

Languages:

  • Fluency in both oral and written communication in English. Knowledge of Arabic and Kurdish languages is desirable.
