DOROT, which means “generations” in Hebrew, was founded in 1976. A multi-service not-for-profit, DOROT’s mission is to alleviate social isolation among the elderly and provide services to help them live independently as valued members of the community. We serve the Jewish and wider community, bringing the generations together in a mutually beneficial partnership of elders, volunteers, and professionals. Our work provides an effective model for others.
For more than four decades, DOROT has been an innovative leader in the fields of aging services and volunteerism. DOROT’s diverse set of programs, as well as our focus on providing intergenerational connections to seniors, has ensured that DOROT’s clients have access to the resources they need to age with dignity, independence, and grace.
ABOUT DOOR TO DOOR
Since 1996, DOROT’s Door to Door (“DtoD”) program has helped seniors extend their ability to live safely at home by providing trained professional Travel Companions to accompany them to medical and other appointments, and to shop for or with them. Door to Door Travel Companions ensure that homebound older adults are able to travel to the doctor, pick up prescriptions, shop for groceries, and manage health-related and other essential appointments. When seniors are unable to travel with support, Travel Companions also run errands on their behalf. Travel Companions provide a bridge of access to services that support older adults in their day to day functioning in the community, maintaining independence and autonomy.
