Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Chief Mission Air Operations Officer or his designate, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Providing an air traffic control service in accordance with the procedures and minimum requirements in accordance with the provisions of ICAO Doc 4444, UN Aviation Manuals and UNISFA Aviation Standard Operating Procedures;

  • Maintaining a continuous watch on all visible operations on and in the vicinity of the aerodrome, including aircraft, vehicles and personnel on the manoeuvring area and controlling such traffic in accordance with the procedures and practices prescribed in the appropriate regulations and instructions;

  • Rendering all possible assistance to aircraft in emergency or distress and where necessary alerting the Emergency Response Units in accordance with the Mission’s Aviation Emergency Response Plan;

  • Issuing information and clearances to aircraft under his control to achieve a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic on and in vicinity of the aerodrome with the object of preventing collisions between:

  • Aircraft flying in the aerodrome traffic circuits around an aerodrome

  • Aircraft operating on the manoeuvring area.

  • Aircraft landing and taking off.

  • Aircraft and vehicles operating on the manoeuvring area.

  • Aircraft and obstructions on the manoeuvring area.

  • Maintaining a continuous watch on the designated aerodrome and ground control frequencies.

  • Providing, as necessary, information on meteorological and aerodrome conditions and providing navigational assistance;

  • Accepting flight plans and briefing aircrew.

  • Ensure that minimum distances are maintained between mission aircraft under his/her control

Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

A university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Aviation Management, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Air Transportation Management or graduation from equivalent military establishment, or a high School certificate in science or related field, with a minimum of five years working experience and training as a Commercial Pilot, or Air Traffic Controller, or Flight Dispatcher, or equal military certification will be accepted in lieu of a university degree.

Required experience: 60 Months Experience remark:

At least 5 years’ progressive experience as a pilot or Air Traffic Controller. Sound knowledge in the following areas: Air Law – Rules and regulations relevant to air traffic control; ATC Equipment – Principles, use and limitations of equipment used in ATC; General knowledge of principles of flight, principles and operations of aircraft, aircraft performance relevant to ATC operations; Meteorology – Use and appreciation of meteorological documentation and information; origin and characteristics of weather phenomena affecting flight operations and safety; altimetry; Navigation – Principles of air navigation; principle, limitation and accuracy of navigation systems and visual aids; Operational Procedures – Air Traffic Control, communication, radiotelephony and phraseology procedures (routine, non-routine and emergency); use of the relevant aeronautical documentation; safety practices associated with flight.
