Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Electrical Shop of the Electrical and Machine Shop, Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the General Foreperson of the Electrical Unit and the Foreperson of the Electrical and Machine Shop.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent performs the following duties:

-Keeps inventory of all electronic related materials and equipment of the UN and ensures at all times for the safety of occupants of the UN facilities by following all necessary and stipulated safety procedures and regulations.

-Reports and executes corrective actions to secure satisfactory standards and timely completion of works.

-Execute work procedures and schedules, utilizing effectively and efficiently material, labour and equipment; ensure maximum safety during all maintenance, repair, and installation duties.

-Conducts scheduled inspections to detect short circuits and electrical malfunctions; reports electrical faults and submits regular maintenance reports to supervisors.

-Maintains inventory records of all equipment, tools, spare parts, materials and maintenance activities; checks levels of stocks regularly and requests orders for spare parts.

-Performs other duties as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent trade school diploma is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of experience in installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment is required.
Experience working under a licensed Master Electrician is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year.

Passing the Trades and Crafts Test (TCT) is a prerequisite for recruitment in the Trades and Crafts category in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the TC test at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application.

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

The selected candidate will be required to perform evening and late night shifts including weekends on rotation, in order to perform assignments including maintenance work that requires off-hours as well as to provide prompt response in case of emergencies.

Physical requirements include lifting and carrying equipment and materials needed to execute the jobs; frequent walking, standing, pushing, pulling, bending, and loading and unloading materials and equipment from storage to job sites.
