1.    Organizational Context

 

  1. Organizational Setting

     

    The post is located in the News and Media Division in the Office of the Director General.  The Division is responsible for delivering news and media strategies and content that explain the intellectual property system in an engaging and informative way, and contribute to better understanding worldwide of WIPO's role and services.  The News and Media Division is responsible for overseeing the Organization's press and media-related activities, including photographic and video productions, as well as producing engaging content to promote awareness and understanding of intellectual property and WIPO's activities.

     

  2. Purpose Statement

     

    The incumbent plans, coordinates, creates and facilitates cross-platform corporate communications content and coverage of the Organization, promoting better understanding of its aims and activities by devising and implementing strategies designed to utilize legacy and new media structures, to promote awareness of WIPO's activities and the overall importance of intellectual property in stimulating human innovation.

     

  3. Reporting Lines

     

    The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Director of the News and Media Division.

     

     

2.     Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

 

a.  Lead the planning, development, coordination and implementation of cross-sectoral communication activities related to content creation and media coverage, of organizational priorities; rationalize, determine the need for and plan content creation to maximize impact on an increasingly diverse array of owned global media platforms, including print, video and multimedia channels, as well as via earned media in the global press;

 

b.  Create, coordinate and implement a unified messaging approach for all WIPO communications, including those disseminated by the Organization's growing overseas representations; manage an internal News Task Force, create periodical newsletters to support internal communications efforts;

 

c.  Create and coordinate high-level content suitable for display on the WIPO web portal, including material that may also be used for dissemination in outside media;  coordinate, author and circulate the bi-weekly WIPO Wire media product designed to inform stakeholders of developments at WIPO;

 

d.  Research, write, revise and/or edit press releases, corporate news and feature videos, Q&As, talking points, presentations and background briefs, articles, and other information material on diverse intellectual property topics for publication in various outlets (e.g.\: business and academic journals, forewords, brochures and exhibition catalogues, etc.) to enhance understanding of intellectual property and WIPO;

 

e.  Develop, establish and maintain effective partnerships with media outlets to direct their attention to those activities and achievements of the Organization that will be of interest to the public or concerned groups;  prepare responses to press enquiries, and ensure that responses to direct or indirect requests for information about the work of the Organization promote better understanding of its objectives and activities; foster positive relations with local and international journalists and facilitate their access to relevant information on WIPO's goals and activities. Ensure media responses are aligned with the Organization's messaging priorities; act as Spokesperson as necessary;

 

f.   Substantively contribute to enhancing WIPO's presence on social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others) and to the coordination and implementation of WIPO's evolving social media use, collaborating with and advising stakeholders across the Organization to ensure its effectiveness and the adoption of relevant social media techniques into the corporate culture; monitor and analyze trends in social media tools, use and applications; contribute content to blog postings as required;

 

g.  Monitor and analyze the ongoing performance of the Organization's media impact and advises management on appropriate action/responses;

 

h.  Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

3.     Requirements

 

Education

Essential

Advanced university degree in communications, journalism, social sciences or a related subject.  A first-level university degree plus an additional two years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

 

Experience

Essential

At least seven years of relevant professional experience in journalism, media relations or public affairs.

 

Practical experience of using social media to support strategic communications objectives.

 

Understanding of intellectual property issues and awareness of WIPO’s work.

 

Language

Essential

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and good knowledge of French.

Excellent drafting skills in English.

 

Ability to present complex issues in succinct and accessible language.  Ability to tailor expression and messages for different audiences and media.

 

Ability to produce web content (news, features etc).

Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the internet.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

5.      Information

 

Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  Please note that this estimate is for information only.  The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the November 2019 rate of 76.7%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Additional Information

 

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
