THE POSITION
Under the supervision of the Manager, Research & Learning, the Research Specialist will be responsible within the two research functions for the following duties:
Programs research management function:
- Actively contribute to management of IDLO’s research pipeline and quality control process, in close coordination with program and communications colleagues;
- Ensure deliverables meet quality standards and review, comment, and edit work product;
- Coordinate research projects across various IDLO departments and actively lead and contribute to knowledge sharing and organizational learning;
- Support research project implementation, including identification and recruitment of experts;
- Engage with IDLO field program offices and other internal stakeholders to help integrate research in project design;
- Act as a liaison between relevant home-based colleagues and those in The Hague, Rome, and field, having a focal role in planning and coordinating activities and ensuring relevant information is shared appropriately.
Institutional research function:
- Provide research support for institutional and policy activities;
- Conduct high-quality research and produce intermediate and final work products, including drafting, reviewing, and providing input to a variety of research reports and project documents including concept notes, donor reports, conference papers, etc.
- Provide technical input in thematic reports on various rule of law and development themes of strategic interest;
- Support maintaining relations with key research stakeholders and interlocutors in order to build networks through which to learn and share research messages and lessons;
- Participate in and represent IDLO at conferences as required by supervisor; and
- Perform other related duties as requested by a supervisor.
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in social sciences and/or law and post-graduate qualifications in a development-related area are required.
- Minimum of five to seven (5-7 years of post-graduate experience in conducting and coordinating research is required, and preferably within an international setting (UN, IGO, international NGO).
- Experience in quantitative and qualitative methodologies using different research techniques.
- Experience and strong understanding of ethics and accountability in research, particularly with respect to sexual and gender-based violence or other sensitive research topics.
- Experience in development and rule of law-related themes, with a focus on sustainable development, access to justice and human rights.
Language
- Excellent oral and writing skills in English.
- Knowledge of Spanish, French, Arabic, or Russian will be an asset.
Technical competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent report writing skills at publication standards.
- Strong oral presentation, communication and networking ability, and inter-personal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively use computer and Microsoft office programs and other electronic sources in research activities.
Behavioral competencies
- Good team player, positive attitude, flexible mind, comfortable working in multi-cultural settings.
- A flexible approach, with the ability to work on multiple different research projects at once while ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
- Organization skills, excellent time management and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Willingness to conduct research-related travel to the field, including conflict-affected and post-conflict countries.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
For this internationally recruited professional position, IDLO shall offer the selected candidate an Affiliate contract of 12 months, with possibility of extension subject to performance and availability of funding. IDLO shall offer the candidate an annual basic salary of EUR €55,000 a leave and benefit package, including health insurance and provident fund in accordance with IDLO Employee Regulations and Rules.
Relocation and installation support are also available for internationally recruited employees.
Salaries and benefits paid by IDLO to employees are exempt from taxation in Italy. IDLO employees are responsible for compliance with income tax laws of their country of nationality or residence and/or of any other relevant fiscal jurisdictions.
