Background
Under the overall guidance of the Head of Office of OHCHR Yemen Country Office in Aden, and direct supervision of designated supervisor, Associate Human Rights Officer is responsible for covering all related issues to Human Rights.
Position is located in Aden, Yemen. The Associate Human rights officer will monitor human rights issues in the prescribed area, including their gender dimensions, with the aim of promoting and protecting human rights, in compliance with international human rights law and international humanitarian law.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts research, collects, verifies and analyses information pertaining to human rights from a variety of sources, including open source, media, Government, and civil society actors.
- Provides inputs to variety of reports, briefings and other types of communications relating to human rights matter in compliance with established standards.
- Drafts and translates reports and correspondence related human rights.
- Maintains awareness of current human rights issues, to include relevant political and legal Developments.
- Participates in meetings and consultations and liaises with various appropriate local and national authorities, civil society, UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes, and other relevant partners to monitor developments in the human rights situation.
- Participates in the preparation and implementation of human rights activities and programmes for strengthening the capacity of civil society, UN organizations and government agencies on the promotion and protection of human rights; and
- Performs other related duties as required.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in international law, law, political or social sciences, or a related field is required.
- A first-level university degree (bachelor's degree) combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be considered as equivalent to an advanced university degree
Experience:
- Relevant professional experience (with master’s degree) in the promotion and protection of human rights and related areas, including in monitoring, reporting and advocacy at the field level, and knowledge of international human rights law, international humanitarian law and national law would be a significant asset.
- Minimum 2 years (with Bachelor' Degree) of relevant professional experience for Master’s degree holders in the promotion and protection of human rights and related areas, including in monitoring, reporting and advocacy at the field level, and knowledge of international human rights law, international humanitarian law and national law would be a significant asset.
- Experience in designing and delivering human rights trainings is an asset.
- Experience in the UN system, OHCHR’s methodology, and knowledge of the UN rules, regulations and procedures is a significant advantage.
- Proficiency in MS Office (MS Excel and MS PowerPoint, in particular).
- Previous OHCHR experience would be desirable.
Language:
- Fluency in Arabic (both oral and written) and English is required.
