UNDP is seeking a climate social media intern to support UNDP’s efforts to strengthen engagement on climate across its global digital platforms. The intern will work closely with Communications Specialists in the UNDP Climate Hub to assist in planning, producing and publishing social media content that aligns with UNDP’s climate messaging and editorial priorities. This includes supporting the development of posts and visual assets, helping to maintain an active social media presence around key climate moments and campaigns, and contributing to analytics and community engagement to improve visibility and impact. The intern will collaborate with the broader UNDP Climate Communications Team, and will report to the Social Media Specialist under Climate Hub.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to UNDP Climate Hub Social Media Specialist in releasing and promoting social media communications products across all digital platforms, including X/Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube.
  • Draft, edit and schedule social media posts aligned with UNDP’s editorial guidelines and the global climate calendar for UNDP corporate and senior leadership channels, ensuring alignment with Climate Hub communications standards.
  • Develop visual content using Canva or other digital tools (e.g. graphics, carousels, videos) for UNDP social media channels, ensuring compliance with Climate Hub visual guidelines.
  • Support in producing regular analysis and evaluation of social media performance, including campaign-specific insights and monthly reports, and provide data-driven recommendations to improve content strategy.
  • Coordinate with Language Communications Specialists to ensure effective dissemination of content for French and Spanish channels.
  • Support updates and organization of the team’s promotional Trello boards.
  • Assist with influencer and partner outreach and engagement for social media campaigns.
  • Provide community engagement support across platforms, including monitoring comments, questions and direct messages, and escalating key issues to Communications Specialists as needed.
  • Track audience sentiment, identify emerging trends within community interactions and support efforts to foster inclusive and positive conversations around climate content.
  • Ensure social media content adheres to accessibility standards (e.g. alt text, captioning, contrast, readability) to meet UNDP’s commitment to inclusive digital communications.
  • Support Climate Hub communications team in implementing best practices for digital communications and maintaining quality and consistency across platforms.
  • Work closely with Climate hub’s Social media specialist to produce content and support campaigns in the lead-up to the UN Climate Change Conference, COP31, taking place in Turkiye.

Required Skills and Experience

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school Programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in communications / social media / media;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a second university degree Programme (minimum Master’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Required  skills 

  • Sound research skills, particularly for translating climate-related terminology and gathering relevant background information.
  • Experience in and understanding of communicating climate-related information to diverse audiences.
  • Understanding of digital communications in international organizations and/or non-profit organizations.
  • Proven records of interest in global issues such as climate change and the work of the United Nations.
  • Experience in drafting and editing content for websites, social media, and other digital platforms.
  • Technical Skills: Microsoft Word, Power point, Excel, Canva.

Required Language(s) 

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Fluency in additional UN languages will be considered an asset.

UNDP Terms & Conditions for Internship:

  • UNDP interns are eligible to receive a monthly stipend, with the rate that varies depending on the duty location. The stipend will be paid monthly, and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly;
  • Where an intern is financially supported by an institution, government or third party, UNDP will (subject to the rules of such institution, government or third party) pay the intern the difference, if any, between the external financial support provided and the applicable UNDP stipend;
  • Except for the stipend, all other expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring government or institution;
  • The intern must provide proof of health insurance coverage for the duration of the internship;
  • Interns are not staff and therefore, are not covered by UN Staff Regulations and Rules.
