Job Purpose and Organizational Context

Under the overall guidance of the Finance and Admin Officer and direct supervision of the Logistics Assistant, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services ensuring high accuracy of work. The Driver demonstrates a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

The Driver provides driving services to the UNOCHA staff in the South Sudan, Consultants and Experts and UN staff on mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services, focusing on achievement of the following results: 

  • Driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents, and other items and 
  • Log all trips, daily mileage, and petrol consumption and keep the logbook up-to-date.
  • Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.

Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle, focusing on achievement of the following result:

  • Check the mechanical status of the assigned vehicle daily
  • accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs
  • provision of inputs to prepare the vehicle maintenance plans and reports

Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle focusing on achievement of the following results: 

  • Timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc. 
  • Ensure that the assigned vehicle is washed and clean

Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies focusing on achievement of the following results: -

  • Including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts

Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents

  • Ensure insurance cover of assigned vehicle is valid
  • Promptly report accidents involving the assigned vehicle in accordance with the established rules and regulations

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Secondary School Education, Formal Drivers training from recognized institutions, elementary motor vehicle mechanic skills and possession of a valid driver’s license.  
  • Basic computer knowledge would be an advantage.

Experience:

  • At least three years’ experience as a driver with a safe driving record
  • A good geographical knowledge and experience in local traffic routes and destinations including the various offices in Renk.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required; good knowledge of local Arabic is desirable.

Probation

For all new UNDP fixed term appointments (FTA), including for staff members being transferred or seconded to UNDP under the Inter-Organization Agreement concerning Transfer, Secondment or Loan of Staff, on an appointment of more than one year, continuation of the appointment beyond the initial 12 months is contingent upon the successful completion of a probationary period.
