The mission of the Green Climate Fund (“GCF”, “Fund”) is to assist developing countries to respond to climate change while bringing prosperity to their peoples.

Established in 2010, the GCF invests in transformational climate projects in the developing world. The Fund makes an ambitious contribution to global climate action and channels significant financial resources into developing countries to help build low-emission and climate-resilient societies.  It is country-driven and undertakes actions that reflect the circumstances of each country concerned and its national aspirations. The GCF is a key enabler of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Position Objective

The Senior Specialist for Media and Public Relations has a leadership role in building the Fund’s global media profile, and in developing and implementing a comprehensive media, public relations and reputational risk management strategy. Working closely across the Division of External Affairs, and with colleagues across the Green Climate Fund, the Senior Specialist will produce materials in support of GCF’s communications for media and other external stakeholders, develop links with top-tier media, promote GCF’s profile, and broaden the understanding of GCF’s mandate and recognition of its brand.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose

  • Lead on implementing media, public relations, and reputational risk management strategies, with a focus on top-tier media and digital media. 
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen the profile and reach of the Fund, broadening understanding of the Fund’s distinctive mandate and recognition of the GCF brand.
  • Coordinate communications plans and strategies to build the Fund’s global media profile, advance beneficial relationships and partnerships, and support replenishment efforts.
  • Support on strategic communications to influence GCF stakeholders to mobilize resources for the Fund and take action on climate change.
     

Engagement

  • Advocate for GCF’s mission and role through writing or commissioning substantive think-pieces which can be adapted for a variety of media.
  • Promote GCF’s engagement in key global campaigns on climate action. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with top-tier global media and related institutions. 

 

Delivery

  • Draft and edit materials in support of GCF’s communications for media and other external stakeholders.
  • Establish good public relations practice to enhance the credibility and visibility of the Green Climate Fund.
  • Undertake any other communications tasks, as assigned.

Required Experience and Qualifications*

  • Master’s or higher-level degree; 
  • Minimum of 11 years of professional experience in international relations or strategic communications, media and public relations; 
  • Effective outreach and advocacy skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver impactful organizational communications and manage high profile global communication initiatives;
  • Established track record in political communications and public relations and in developing links with top-tier media, senior politicians and policymakers;
  • Relevant work experience in media and journalism, multilateral organizations, international development, private sector and/or non-governmental organizations; and
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of another UN language an advantage.
     

*The person assessed by the Selection Panel as most suitable for the position will be proposed for appointment. Selection among short-listed candidates will also take into account performance at interview, appropriate testing, and references.
