IRC’s Emergencies & Humanitarian Action Unit

The IRC’s Emergencies & Humanitarian Action Unit (EHAU) oversees IRC’s global emergency preparedness and response activities. The mission of the EHAU is to expand and improve IRC’s ability to help affected communities survive in acute emergencies and hard to reach contexts by investing in people, systems, and solutions to complex humanitarian challenges.The EHAU team achieves this mission through ongoing rigorous risk analysis, investing in capacity strengthening of frontline humanitarians, partnership with local actors, offering collaborative support and technical assistance to teams working in emergencies and hard to reach places, and deploying and supporting world class emergency response staff as they help people affected by acute crisis situations.

Job Overview

The EHAU works to support and empower a network of more than 400 frontline IRC emergency staff.The Learning and Training Advisor will be key to driving EHAU’s capacity sharing and strengthening agenda to empower frontline colleagues to deliver world class emergency response programs.The Learning & Training Advisor ensures appropriate coordination and standardized quality within all capacity strengthening and training programs led by EHAU.The Learning & Training Advisor works under the direction of the Director of People & Operations, collaborating closely with IRC’s Talent Management team, and EHAU and regional HR colleagues.

This is a critical position that will require the incumbent to develop broad familiarity with the span of IRC programs and operations around the world. The incumbent will need to be able to translate complex concepts for staff with a range of emergency experience and skills, presenting information in a user-friendly way. They will need to quickly learn and understand what is in place in order to build on it and identify the gaps.They will also need to understand the needs of staff in a range of environments and develop creative training plans. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, a high level of personal initiative and the ability to work well in a sophisticated, multicultural, dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

• Partner with key contacts from all EHAU sections to advise and guide with best practices for design, development and delivery of capacity strengthening programs

• Apply best practices in humanitarian aid pedagogy, diverse curriculum delivery methods and cutting-edge professional development approaches to improve program quality and efficiency.

• In collaboration with the Director, People & Operations, provide guidance and oversight to the development and implementation of the relaunched IRC Emergency Learning program – based on a blended learning approach that could include, mentorship, in person training and online learning opportunities.

• Engage with all stakeholders to determine key deliverables for the development of communications and learning programs

• For all training and capacity strengthening programs, develop reports/templates for teams to track interactivity and completion, and utilize criteria and metrics to evaluate efficacy, providing post implementation revisions and support.

• Develop and deliver “train the trainer” sessions for staff in key positions to support the rollout of initiatives.

• When required, deliver/facilitate learning and development sessions directly, using a blend of methodologies including computer based, self managed learning, management cascade and on the job learning

• Utilize and promote use of technology to execute learning and development initiatives

• Apply and maintain familiarity with the latest in teaching aids, instructional design and training techniques relevant to the organization's goals and objectives

• Ensure all recurring learning programs are updated on a regular basis to encompass program, product, service delivery, procedural and technology changes

• Provide input from a learning perspective on EHAU’s response and operations tools

• Work with Deputy Director, Human Resources on EHAU’s staff development initiatives and advise on continual improvements for EHAU’s new hire orientation
