OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

1. Context

Through its partnerships, UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Program (MAB) support scientific works promoting innovative frameworks bringing together economic development and conservation of natural ecosystems. Major research topics include the role that multinational firms have in the territories where they extract raw material and how they can facilitate ecological transitions of deeply rooted economic models. Only a comparative analysis of trajectories of several production sites where objectives reconciling both biodiversity conservation and economic development have been acted can help establish an institutional diagnosis recommending innovative organizational strategies for an ecological transition. In this regard, the worldwide network of biosphere reserves offers the ideal laboratory to produce such a diagnosis.

2. Main objectives

In that context, the consultant main objective will be to evaluate different supply schemes in the biosphere-reserve network to identify drivers of change in developing innovative sustainable corporate strategies, bringing together biosphere conservation and economic development of local populations.

  • To meet these objectives, the consultant will have to:
    • Carry out a literature review on biodiversity conservation approaches in corporate strategies.
    • Identify supply schemes of multinationals company within UNESCO's MAB biosphere reserve network which are assumes to have had positive impacts on both natural ecosystems and economic development of local populations.
    • Describe, in these biosphere reserves, interactions between natural ecosystems, technical innovations, institutional and cultural context to identify elements that allowed to conciliate biodiversity conservation and economic development.
    • Write a comparative study of identified economic model.
    • Produce, based on the lessons common to the identified case studies, an analysis methodology of different types of corporate strategies and business models.
    • Design communication materials to spread conclusions of the study.

DECEMBER: Presentation of expected objectives and methods selected to meet them; suggestion of a timeline for the different stages of the study (7 pages).

                Literature review: context of the expert work (2 pages).

JANUARY: Literature review: historical perspective historique (2 pages).

FEBRUARY: Literature review: theoretical framework of the research question (2 pages).

MARCH: Literature review: research methods and techniques (2 pages).

APRIL: Intermediary report on economic models of identified case studies (5 pages);

MAY: Intermediary report describing coevolutive interactions between ecological ecosystems, technical innovations, institutional and cultural context of identifiedcase studies (5 pages).

JUNE: Final report describing coevolutive interactions between ecological ecosystems, technical innovations, institutional and cultural context of identified case studies (5 pages).

JULY: Comparative studies on conservation approaches on studied fields and major common conclusions (10 pages).

AUGUST: Synthesis: analysis grid and research hypothesis (2 pages).

SEPTEMBER: Communication materials (powerpoint, case study summary sheet).

EDUCATION

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in environmental economies or a related discipline.

WORKING EXPERIENCE 

  • At least 3 years of professional experience, with a proven professional experience in consulting and acknowledged skills using GIS software used for ecosystem services valuation (InVest, QGIS).

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Good knowledge on field interview methods, including discrete choice experiments and its econometric analysis.

  • Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English or French and good knowledge of the other.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
