ABOUT MCGOVERNDOLE PROJECT

WFP School Feeding Unit have received a confirmation from USDA - McGovern-Dole Food for Education Program to undertake school feeding and technical assistance project for four years period to enable the Ethiopian Government to transit towards national ownership of school meals program.  The project will be covering around 185,693 primary school children in Afar and Oromia Regions.  The regions are mainly pastoralists who live in a marginalized environment and whose livelihood is exposed to the vagaries of climate and harsh environmental conditions and suffers from law participation into schooling and education. 

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

This position is located in the WFP Ethiopia Country Office, Semera Sub Office, Afar Region.

Job Holders at this grade are expected to demonstrate responsibility and initiative in monitoring food handling from food quality and safety perspective, this is ranging from food receipt; storage, meal preparation; cooking, kitchen layout and hygiene; to water quality. This shall include also monitoring sanitation facilities/toilettes adequacy and personal hygiene at schools.

JOB PURPOSE

WFP Ethiopia is looking for a Logistics Associate to contribute in establishing preventative measures and standard practices in place to decrease the risk of food incident occurrence. The incumbent is expected to support in ensuring that food commodities / meals provided through WFP School Feeding Programme is safe and of good and acceptable quality for students, by undertaking a strict food safety and quality monitoring procedures for food product across its supply chain.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under direct supervision of the Logistics Officer, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

  • Support the overall Logistics Operations in delivering School Feeding food commodities and associated Non-Food Items to destination schools.
  • Conduct regular and surprise visits to schools to ensure compliance of food handling and hygienic practices which shall include and not limited to food receipt, storage, meal preparation and food serving activities.
  • Establish solid food safety preventative measure after performing risk assessment for food handling activities at the school ensuring that likelihood of food incident is reduced and eventually eliminated.
  • Establish and maintain coordination with School directors; School food management committee; local educational and health authorities for smooth support on food testing, food disposal and related issues
  • Identify training needs and develop training modules on Food Quality and Safety practices at schools in collaboration with Food Quality and Safety team in Country Office (CO) which will allow bringing school management, woreda educational and health authorities up to speed to the principles and practices related to food quality and safety.

  • Ensure school stores compliance with WFP’s manuals on Storage of Special Nutritious Foods and Grains.

  • Propose proactively preventive measures to mitigate food losses and  food incidents/food borne diseases.
  • Follow up of the shelf life of foods in warehouses, notify and advise on the actions to be taken accordingly.
  • In case of food quality issues identified, propose corrective actions to address the food quality issues and minimize losses of food.
  • Prepare regular reports related to Food Quality and Food Safety and provide regular updates to support informed planning and decision-making.
  • Ensure that the disposals of food which are declared unfit for human consumption are as per WFP disposal guidelines and procedures.
  • Perform regular commodity inventory at schools.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A university degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Economics, Business Administration, Logistics, or related field.

Experience:  Six (6) or more years of relevant progressively responsible experience in a related field.

Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English. Knowledge of the local language is an added advantage.
