Eligibility criteria

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Communications and Innovation Team Leader, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

1. Provide administrative and communications support to the Communications and Innovation unit (including the Accelerator Lab), focusing on the following:

  • Conduct research to identify the most appropriate organizations, websites and blogs to engage with the Accelerator Lab and establish relationships with key influencers;
  • Support the maintenance of the Country Office media database with regular updates of leading English and vernacular language journalists, media outlets and publishing houses;
  • Compile social media updates and media coverage clippings into regular updates and distribute press briefs to relevant staff;
  • Support the professional use of social media by executing monthly social media editorial calendars with various online activities including Twitter chats, Facebook Lives and others, in line with UNDP’s advocacy campaigns and events;
  • Administrative and logistical support including the dissemination of information and publications; assistance at public events such as roundtable discussions, press conferences, briefing sessions, and interviews;
  • Research and retrieval of statistical data from internal and external sources;
  • Budgetary support in Atlas, including extraction of project information and budget revisions, as required;
  • Assist in the day-to-day administrative requirements for the Communications and Innovation Unit, such as booking meetings, filling out forms, maintaining work unit files, etc.

2. Assist in UNDP South Sudan’s in-house audio-visual productions, focusing on the following:

  • Assist with filming and coverage of key events for multiple purposes and audiences, such as campaigns, digital outreach, resource mobilization, etc;
  • Edit short videos for use on the UNDP website, social media and at events, in addition to short video messages from senior management and programme staff;
  • Compile b-roll material and photographs of UNDP’s Accelerator Lab and priority areas of intervention;
  • Assist in developing and designing social media packs, infographics and other visual materials that showcase UNDP’s work in South Sudan;
  • Assist with implementation of corporate guidelines for audio-visual material in line with UNDP’s overall branding guidelines;
  • Ensure administrative arrangements for consultancies and external productions carried out in close collaboration with relevant programme and operations staff.

3. Assist in the implementation of the overall Communications Strategy of UNDP South Sudan’s work focusing on:

  • Assist in the implementation of Accelerator Lab activities and initiatives to promote public awareness of, and access to, information and publicity materials;
  • Assist in effectively liaising with local media, NGO’s, civil society, and other partners;
  • Assist in information gathering for the updating of the corporate UNDP website;
  • Develop and maintain an adequate network of national media contacts, communications contacts within UNDP/UN, and international media partners;
  • Transform text-based communications materials into visual graphic design form, as needed.

4. Assist in the facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing focusing on the following:

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of Accelerator Lab and Communications training activities;
  • Sound contributions to Accelerator Lab and Communications knowledge networks and communities of practice.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

University degree in Communications, Digital Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Political or social sciences, or similar degree.

Required experience: 24 Months Experience remark:

The incumbent must be a dynamic, multi-functional person, who supports UNDP South Sudan with professionalism, dedication and client orientation. The following qualifications are required:

  • University degree in Communications, Digital Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Political or social sciences, or similar degree.

  • Two years of professional work experience in communication, with a focus on editing and production of social media, video and short documentaries, new technology or public relations.

  • Excellent drafting skills and ability to convey messages in a very simple, yet inspiring way.

  • Be fully proficient in Microsoft Office, web-based platforms and social media.

  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and/or other photo/video editing software a distinct advantage.

  • Have affinity with or interest in development, humanitarian relief, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English required. Knowledge of Arabic a distinct advantage.
