Notwithstanding the general considerations set out in the ILO Staff Regulations, this vacancy announcement is the only authoritative document pertaining to the qualifications required for this position. The minimum required qualifications were determined in view of the specific duties and responsibilities of this position.

 

The specific language requirements for this position are detailed hereunder. However, candidates applying for the professional category vacancies who have not already successfully completed their probationary period within the ILO and whose mother tongue is not one of the working languages of the Office (English, French and Spanish), shall be required to possess a fully satisfactory working knowledge of at least one of the ILO working languages. If appointed they may be required to acquire a knowledge of a second working language of the Office during their initial years of service.

Introduction

The position is located in the Official Documents Arabic Translation Unit (OFFDOC/A) within the Department of Official Meetings, Documentation and Relations (RELMEETINGS). There are seven language units in the Department that provide language services in the ILO official languages (English, French and Spanish) and in the ILO working languages (Chinese, Russian, Arabic and German).

The OFFDOC/A Unit is responsible for the editing, translation and revision and text processing of official ILO documents, including those submitted to the International Labour Conference, the Governing Body, Regional Meetings and Expert and Technical Meetings, as relevant, as well as documents produced by the Office of the Director-General.

The incumbent of the position will translate, self-revise and deliver accurate, stylistically appropriate and complete translations within the established deadlines and in accordance with the established standards, policies and procedures.

The position will report to the Head of the Arabic Unit.

Specific Duties

  1. Translate from English and/or French into Arabic, a wide range of documents dealing with a variety of subjects and ensure that translations are equivalent in meaning and style to the original texts.
  2. Contribute to the development/improvement of Arabic terminology in the ILO’s terminology database by proposing new entries for validation by the Head of the Unit, identifying potential subject fields requiring terminological research and conducting such research as requested.
  3. Use, evaluate and make proposals for the improvement of computer-assisted translation and terminology (CATT) tools and keep informed of technical developments in these areas.
  4. Translate, as required, from Arabic into English and/or French, subject to revision, correspondence received by the ILO from Arab Constituents.
  5. Provide clarifications to temporary translators on the application of ILO document production procedures, use of references and CATT tools, when requested.
  6. Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

 

These specific duties are aligned with the relevant ILO generic job description, which includes the following generic duties:

Generic Duties

1.    Translate from two or more working languages into the target language a full range of documents, reports, formal texts, manuscripts, official correspondence, publications and other material. Produce accurate and complete versions in the target language using the most appropriate range of vocabulary and the commonly accepted or established equivalents of professional, scientific or technical concepts and terms.

2.    Edit texts in the target language to ensure a style of presentation in conformity with ILO standards.

3.    Undertake research related to the texts in hand. Propose additional terms for the established standards of terminology and glossaries.

4.    Collect and verify terminology and references.

5.    Occasionally revise translations made by other staff.
   

Required qualifications

Education

First level university degree in translation, languages or other fields relevant to translation.  Translators must also be assessed in a competitive framework in translation, which may if necessary include a written examination.

Experience

At least five years of professional translation experience and/or at least three years at the international level.

Languages

Excellent command of Arabic, very good command of English and a good command of French.

Competencies

In addition to the ILO core competencies, this position requires:
 

Considerable knowledge and understanding of a particular substantive technical field and a wide variety of subjects. Ability to grasp the meaning, and make adequate use of appropriate technical concepts and terminology. Sound language translation skills and excellent drafting ability in Arabic. Knowledge of the subject matter dealt with by the Organization. Knowledge of and experience in utilising CATT tools. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work on own initiative as well as a member of a team. Ability to work under time pressure. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to demonstrate gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.

 


 

Conditions of employment

  • Any appointment/extension of appointment is subject to ILO Staff Regulations and other relevant internal rules. Any offer of employment with the ILO is conditional upon certification by the ILO Medical Adviser that the person concerned is medically fit to perform the specific inherent requirements of the position offered. In order to confirm an offer from the ILO the successful candidate will be required to undergo a medical examination.
  • The first contract will be issued for a twenty-four month period.
  • A successful external candidate will be on probation for the first two years of assignment.
  • Any extension of contract beyond the probation period is subject to satisfactory conduct and performance.
