Mobile Info Team is determined to work towards a future where asylum seekers and refugees in Greece have fair access to asylum and are treated with the respect their humanity deserves. We assist families and individual asylum seekers by providing dedicated, long-term support during their asylum and family reunification cases. We research legal and political developments relevant to migrants in Greece and Europe and disseminate information through our daily hotline and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/mobileinfoteam). We attend community centres and refugee camps to provide up to date information on the asylum process. We also provide advocacy at different levels, including collecting testimonies on human rights abuses such as illegal push backs.
What we are looking for:
A passionate supporter of social justice that has experience in advocacy and legal analysis in the refugee sector, but also a creative, strategic communicator.
The ideal candidate will be proactive, flexible and able to both motivate and encourage engagement of team members and clearly communicate the mission and impact of MIT across multiple tasks, social media, and content creation.
ADVOCACY: essential duties and responsibilities
The advocacy and communication officer is responsible for monitoring and reporting of the legal framework and political and social context of refugees and asylum seekers in Greece, as well as designing and implementing the Mobile Info Team Advocacy strategy.
This role will see you identify the main needs where we should advocate on behalf of refugees and asylum-seekers in Greece. You will be required to document complaints, understand trends arising and find strategies where we can be effective at making a difference. This could be helping a certain group of asylum-seekers overcome a barrier that is preventing them from having fair access to the asylum system and/or instances of human rights abuses that we must ensure are correctly investigated.
Your main tasks will include drafting communications and advocacy material, including newsletters, reports, promotional materials.
You will be responsible for developing a new strategy and for utilising our existing network of actors to provide effective advocacy. What is more, you will also assist in expanding our current advocacy work around illegal push-backs of asylum-seekers across the Greek-Turkish border.
You need to be able to collect data, find effective advocacy strategies and be able to produce content that we can circulate to different levels of actors including policymakers in the European Parliament, Greek legislators, actors working in the refugee crisis in Greece and the general public.
Knowledge of the Greek refugee context is not required but would be very beneficial.
COMMUNICATION: essential duties and responsibilities
As Social Media and Communication Manager you are in charge of Mobile Info Team communication strategy, including developing advocacy strategies about key projects and campaigns (in collaboration with the Coordinator).
You lay a key role in increasing public awareness of Mobile Info Team activities and promoting them with a particular focus on amplifying our policy, research and campaigning work through strategic media relations.
You edit and generate content for MIT social media, newsletter, presentations, and reports.
You develop strategic partnerships with key constituencies and serve as a spokesperson and advocacy liaison to media organizations, governmental bodies, other organisations.
Identify newsworthy media opportunities, writing strong media pitches, press releases, statements which generate maximum impact and opinion pieces.
Benefit:
A challenging and fulfilling work experience with beneficiaries and other actors involved in the refugee crisis in Greece. You will gain in-depth knowledge of asylum procedures in Greece and family reunification processes. To facilitate your time here, we are able to offer subsidised living expenses (that include shared accommodation and basic food) and a modest compensation.
Commitment:
To be able to offer continuity to the people we support, we are looking for a commitment of at least 6 months starting as soon as possible. Strong preference will be given to candidates who are able to commit to longer.
