Background

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Operations Associate, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to UN Resident Coordinator ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver demonstrates a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

The Driver also provides driving services to the operations and programme staff in the UNRCO, Consultants and Experts and UN staff on mission.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Provision of reliable and secure driving services

  • Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle

  • Effective mail and registry management

 

  1. Provision of Reliable and secure driving services
  • Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services by a) driving office vehicles for the transportation of the UN Resident Coordinator, office personnel and other authorized personnel, and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items and b) meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.

 

  1. Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.

 

  1. Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc. Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents

 

  1. Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts.

 

  1. Ensures effective mail management focusing on
  • Receipt, registration, coding and forwarding of incoming faxes, letters, and other correspondence received by mail, diplomatic pouch or electronically to proper department/unit/personnel
  • Registration and dispatch of outgoing communications, including pouch and follow-up distribution. Prepares the summary of enclosure forms and necessary documents and maintains the file on pouches received to ensure that all bags are accounted for.
  • Maintenance of electronic registry/archive system in close cooperation with the ICT personnel.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Secondary Education. Valid Driver’s License

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years’ work experience as a driver; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair.
  • Experience with an international organization is an asset.
  • Ability to work with computer and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages.

Language Requirements:

Proficiency in English. Working knowledge of other UN language desirable.
