Organizational Context

The YWCA of India with 88 local associations and membership of 10,000 women is part of World YWCA, a global movement of 25 million women and girls in 125 countries. Being a pioneer women’s movement in India, it advocates for women’s rights, works towards their development, promotes and sustains women’s leadership for justice, peace, health, human dignity, freedom and care for the environment. YWCA champions Young Women Transformational Leadership initiatives to influence policies, regulations and social norms.

The YWCA is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women and it has a long history of service, advocacy with examples of women and girls working together across the boundaries of race, religion, economic status and political preferences.

It also works to for the survival, protection and participation of children of all ages through early childhood care, education programmes and advocacy for their rights.

The upcoming step is the The Rise up IV initiative is starting from July 2021 for a period of 3 years.

 

Purpose of Role:

Rise Up! Leads are the central implementers of the RiseUp! program at a country level. They will lead engagement with young women, deliver the RiseUp! leadership training and activities, and implement monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL). They will facilitate peer networking and advocacy by young women, including engaging with alumni in their operating context. In addition, RiseUp! Leads will provide technical support in their area of expertise across the YWCAs in India as determined at the outset of the program. They will be central to developing content and materials that form part of the RiseUp! model and to co-leading analysis and learning to guide program strategy and implementation approaches.

Key responsibilities :

RiseUp! Leads will have dual functions:

·      1.Leading implementation of young women’s leadership programs

    • Leading delivery of RiseUp! in each community, including delivering training and supporting young women’s leadership development activities.
    • Program management of young-women focused activities, including planning, risk management, and decision-making over budget allocations.
    • Leading mapping of communities to determine where to work and meeting with leaders in each community prior to the training to facilitate young women’s participation in the program.
    • Leading engagement with alumni, including follow up on their leadership activities after training.
    • Leading MEL for community-level activities and inter-generational leadership change.
    • Managing and maintaining relationships with MAs where they work, including engaging in decision-making as per the opt-in agreement and inter-generational power-sharing commitments.
    • Working with MAs to ensure that the delivery staff and peer educators are trained in core policies such as child protection and have agreed to their obligations under these policies.

2. Providing technical support across the YWCAs in India in their area of expertise

·  Co-creating new RiseUp! program approaches and materials.

·  Co-leading analysis and learning (including evaluation and research) to inform the RiseUp! approach and strategic directions

·  Delivering technical assistance in their area of expertise, including training and coaching, development of approaches, tools and resources, and guiding MEL of their technical area.

·  Required expertise (These skills will also be developed through RiseUp! Phase IV)

·  Facilitation and training skills focusing on participatory and inclusive approaches

·  Ability to build relationships and understanding with young women from diverse contexts

·  Ability to engage with and build buy-in from diverse stakeholders, such as community leaders, partner organizations and formal leaders of Member Associations

·  Data collection, collation and analysis skills, including in diverse and low-resource contexts.

·  Basic accounting and budgeting skills

·  Basic performance and financial reporting skills

  • Qualifications and Experience
    • Degree either in Social Science, Gender Studies, Management, Public Policy, or related social sciences.
    • At least 3 to 5 years of professional experience working in one or more of the following areas: Developing programmes on women and youth issues, networking and advocacy, gender-based violence, public policy analysis/development, strategic and action planning, gender budgeting, data collection and data analysis, and gender equality/women’s empowerment training.
    • Strong understanding of gender equality and women's empowerment, especially related to community mobilization and movement building/strengthening;
    • Good knowledge of programme formulation and implementation and Results Based Management;
    • Proven organizational experience in building strategic partnerships and networking with government agencies, women led organizations, CSOs, and other non-traditional partners.
    • Strong research, writing, analysis skills in the substantive area
    • Experience in the development and delivery of training programmes, tool kits, evaluation and monitoring matrices, and mentoring.
    • Demonstrated experience in Monitoring and evaluations of programmes
    • Fluency in English is required.
    • Knowledge of Hindi and any another language would be an asset.
    • ·      Experience of working with multiple stakeholders to support programme delivery in diverse cultural contexts would be a strong asset

Contracting Arrangements:

Successful candidates will be included in YWCA of India RiseUp IV Team for a probation period of 6 months and thereafter on successful completion, will be appointed for 3 years till the culmination of the Rise Up! Initiative in 2025. Being on the rolls of the YWCA of India for 3 years doesn’t necessarily mean that a contract with YWCA of India in future is guaranteed. This will depend on forthcoming needs.
