Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more at http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.

CERN's Engineering Department is looking for a talented Technical Drafter to work on the integration and optimization of CERN's electrical systems. If you are looking to work and interact with a wide range of experts, using a large array of CAD software in the context of the most complex machine ever built, this opportunity is for you. Take Part!

The Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) at CERN is responsible for the electrical power-distribution network (from 400 kV to 400/230V), for the fibre-optics infrastructure, and for signal and DC-power cabling for the accelerator complexes.

You will join the electrical Design and Documentation section (EN-EL-DDO) and actively participate in a large variety of tasks from 3D integration designs to 2D drafting activities of electrical installations. These installations include equipment such as power transformers, switchboards, cable ladders, racks, water cooled cables and so forth.

As a 3D Designer Technician, you will:

  • Support senior 3D Design Integrators in the DDO in the field of 3D integration studies of large CERN projects, such as the High - Luminosity and Host-Lab projects;
  • Study the integration of electrical systems, components and services using CATIA V5 as the main Computer-aided design tool;
  • Prepare drawings for technical documentation such as installation drawings, in compliance with relevant drafting standards;
  • Develop and propose new integration solutions, making the most efficient use of space in CERN installations;
  • Create 2D and 3D design drawings in AutoCAD.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a Technical Diploma or equivalent (careers.cern/ttediplomas), in an electrical or mechanical field, and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However, you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
  • You should have a good knowledge of technical English (French knowledge is considered as an asset).

Specific skills required for this job

  • Design of electrical and mechanical systems: preferably hands-on knowledge of Dassault Systems Catia V5 CAD package;
  • Mechanical and electrical systems integration: analysis of integration issues, drafting space occupation plans, also considering future space requirements;
  • 3D and 2D technical drawing:  preparation of 3D models and 2D technical drawings;
  • Mechanical analysis and modelling: analysis and solving of basic mechanical engineering problems using strength of materials and materials selection principles.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
  • A monthly stipend of 4585 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
  • 2,5 days of paid leave per month.

Required documentation:

You will need the following documents, clearly labelled (e.g. “CV”, “Motivation letter”, “Academic transcript”, etc.) and in PDF format to complete your application:

  • A CV;
  • A scanned copy of your latest relevant qualification;
  • One reference letter (from a professor or previous employer) giving an overview of your academic and/or professional achievements. This should be as broad as possible.
    • You may upload the reference letter yourself, whilst submitting your application, or through your referee via the link you will receive shortly after submitting your application.

All applications should normally reach us no later than 30.09.2021.
