CHAI is about to begin supporting Latin America on a COVID-19 related project focused on supply chain strengthening and catalytic implementation, using the best available tests and therapeutics.

CHAI will provide regional support for Central, South America and Caribbean countries by sharing key evidence and information with the Ministries of Health and Regional coordination bodies such as COMISCA (Council of Ministers of Health of Central America), CARICOM (Caribbean Community) and other regional bodies for South America. CHAI will work with countries on gathering market intelligence for covid-19 diagnosis and therapeutics, and in understanding the regulatory pathways for new tests and treatment so they can be locally registered. For demand creation and market shaping activities, CHAI will work at regional level and more closely with high-volume countries in providing the necessary evidence and information so the Ministries of Health can consider the use of diagnostics and therapeutics on a promptly manner.

Overview of role

CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong organizational and management skills to provide direct technical support to the Ministries of Health and other key Stakeholders in Central, South America and the Caribbean. The Regional Associate(s) will focus primarily on supporting the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean in assessing the current situation and market readiness for new diagnostic tools and therapeutics for COVID-19.

The successful candidate will work with a range of CHAI’s operational and technical staff as well as diverse national stakeholders, and will therefore need to possess strong communication and organizational skills. She or he must be able to build and manage effective relationships, have strong communication and organization skills, while having a deep personal commitment to producing results. CHAI places great value on relevant personal qualities including resourcefulness, tenacity, independence, patience, humility, and strong work ethic.

The base location for this position will be Panama. This role might require travel to high-risk countries, with limited infrastructure and medical care.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a trusted adviser to the Ministries of Health
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders from government and partner organizations from public health and academia
  • Gather required information about COVID-19 diagnostic and treatment trends in multiple countries in Latin America
  • Support the Governments in Latin America on providing the right evidence to inform their decisions about the adoption of new innovative diagnostic and therapeutic tools
  • Work closely with regional technical teams and Regional Director to ensure the achievement of proposed outcomes
  • Proactively develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders across government and non-governmental organizations
  • Represent CHAI in external meetings as needed.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least 5 years of work experience
  • Strong problem solving skills and analytical capabilities
  • Detail-oriented with strong organization skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and work independently
  • Experience living and working in resource-limited areas
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships in a challenging politically unstable environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience living or working in Latin America
  • Fluency in Spanish; proficiency level in English is a plus
