Safety Systems Engineer in the Independent Safety Office, Product Assurance and Safety Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
The Independent Safety Office is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, maintenance and certification of compliance with ESA policies, requirements, standards and support to ESA projects for:
• Human spaceflight safety
• Space debris mitigation
• Re-entry safety
• Nuclear safety for applications in space
• Planetary protection.
You will report to the Head of the Independent Safety Office within the technical fields described above, and your main tasks and responsibilities will include:
• providing technical support and guidance to the ESA human spaceflight projects in the frame of the International Space Station and Lunar Gateway Programmes regarding the interpretation of safety requirements, identification of hazard causes, and implementation of hazard controls;
• supporting the ESA Safety Review Panel chair with regard to the conduct of ESA safety reviews for the certification of ISS and Lunar Gateway systems and payloads;
• providing technical support for assessing and communicating ESA astronaut safety risks for flights with international partners and commercial crew transportation vehicles;
• supporting ESA ISS Mission Operations by reviewing operational hazard controls and ensuring implementation of the related entries into the ESA Operations Control Agreement Database (eOCAD);
• providing support for human spaceflight safety related interface activities with ISS and Lunar Gateway international partners (e.g. preparation and processing of safety NCRs and exemptions, and participation in programme integrated safety reviews);
• contributing to the continuous improvement of working procedures in the frame of the ESA safety review panels;
• participating in feasibility studies, project reviews and the evaluation of procurement proposals;
• contributing to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for the Agency’s technology programmes;
• monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise;
• contributing to dissemination of the results of activities performed and to the transfer of knowledge across the Agency;
• providing expert technical support and advice to ESA projects, programmes and general studies in the frame of the responsibilities of the Independent Safety Office within your area of competence.
A master’s degree in engineering for this post is required.
Experience in human spaceflight safety certification for vehicle systems and payloads.
Experience in the development and verification of systems for human spaceflight.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

In accordance with the European Space Agency’s security procedures and as part of the selection process, successful candidates will be required to undergo basic screening before appointment.
Recruitment will normally be at the first grade in the band (A2); however, if the candidate selected has little or no experience, the position may be filled at A1 level.
