The selection process for the first cohort of Junior Professionals will take place during Spring 2022, successful candidates are expected to start work during the period June-October 2022.

Description

In the context of several new EU and ESA programmes (Copernicus, Destination Earth, Digital Twin Earth & Universe), you will be responsible for innovation and supporting definition and implementation with a view to ensuring the seamless integration and management of Third Party Mission data, mostly from commercial providers, into the rapidly developing EO data service eco-systems related to Very High Resolution (VHR) EO data.

Duties

Under the supervision of the ESA EO Third Party Missions Manager, your work will encompass several coordination tasks related to the required innovation, definition and implementation activities, all of which are intended to provide users of Copernicus, Destination Earth (DestinE) and Digital Twin Earth & Universe (DTE&U) programmes with EO commercial data, mainly VHR data and, in particular, data from “NewSpace” companies.

During the first year (2022), you will initially focus on the required evolution of an appropriate Copernicus Contributing Missions data management system (for implementation during 2023) in order to pave the way for the large-scale integration of VHR data into the Copernicus domain but also into the DestinE and DTE&U domains. You will therefore need a good understanding  of ESA’s role in the management and integration of VHR/commercial data in the future. This may include the option of ESA acting as a potential anchor customer for current and future commercial EO data providers. You will also need sound knowledge of user data needs within the Copernicus, DestinE and DTE&U programmes.

The objective of these activities is to demonstrate that VHR/commercial data is being efficiently and effectively integrated into Copernicus, DestinE, and DTE&U services for the benefit of the corresponding service users as well as commercial data providers (in particular NewSpace companies).

From day one, you will learn on the job and benefit from tailored development opportunities, including exposure to different ESA business areas and participation in technical and key skills training courses.

On top of this, you will have additional training to build up specific skills and knowledge as well as all the support you need to pursue a career in ESA.

As part of the development programme, the intention is that you will benefit from a placement (minimum duration of 1 month) at one or more of the European institutions operating a Copernicus service (e.g. European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), EMSA, SatCen, Frontex, EEA).
