Our team and mission
This YGT position is in the ESA Space Weather Office and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The Space Weather Office is responsible for planning and implementing all space weather related activities in Space Safety. The Office’s current activities include development of the Space Weather Service Network, New Space weather models, applications and tools for space weather nowcasting and forecasting, and space-based measurement systems for monitoring solar activity and the space environment in the vicinity of the Earth. The space segment activities include space weather instruments on board satellites as hosted payloads, the development of dedicated small satellite and nanosatellite missions for space weather monitoring and also the implementation of major space missions like the Lagrange mission for space weather monitoring from the L5 point.
The Space Weather Office is the architect of the European Space Weather System. Since 2015, the WMO has played a significant role in the global coordination of space weather activities and the definition of observational requirements for space weather.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship
In this traineeship you will participate in the preparation and planning of space weather activities both in the ESA Space Weather Office and in the WMO. This work will help to define the future European Space Weather System and global space weather coordination at the WMO. In ESA, you will form part of the team planning the next generation of the Space Weather Service Network, hosted payload, nanosatellite and SmallSat missions and the end-to-end space weather modelling framework for European space weather services. In the WMO, you will join the Space Systems and Utilization team and support the definition of user requirements for the current and space-based observing system for space weather. Liaising between ESA and the WMO will be an important part of your work. You will mainly be based at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), although you may be required on occasion to work at the WMO’s premises in Geneva.

Education
You should have just completed, or be in the final year of your Master’ s degree in a technical or scientific discipline.
Additional requirements
You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multi-cultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
