Vi Agroforestry (Vi-skogen) is a Swedish development cooperation organisation, fighting poverty and working with sustainable agriculture and land management through agroforestry – growing trees alongside crops and livestock. We do this together with small-holder farming families and farmers’ organisations in four countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda) in and near the Lake Victoria Basin in East Africa. Agroforestry provides increased access to food, access to sustainable energy sources and more income. Agroforestry also contributes to the mitigation of climate change and protects against the negative effects of climate change. Since its inception in 1983, Vi Agroforestry has reached over 2,3 million people through education, advisory and services.

 

Vi Agroforestry is now recruiting a Media Officer. The position is part of the Media and Advocacy Department based at the Head Office in Stockholm. The employment is a permanent position with six months’ probation period. Start date as soon as possible.

 

Main responsibilities

The officer is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing the media outreach work at the media and advocacy department for Vi Agroforestry, including crisis communications. The officer is also responsible for coordinating Vi Agroforestry’s regional communications officer, in collaboration with the Media Officer at We Effect. Travelling to countries where Vi Agroforestry work is also part of the job, both physically and digitally.

 

Main tasks

  • Plan, implement and evaluate opinion and media activities (press releases, op-eds, social media posts, reportsetc), in Sweden – anchored in Vi Agroforestry’s advocacy Plan and Global Advocacy Strategy.
  • Being the focal point for the regional communications officer, including gathering of news and case stories to support advocacy and fundraising.
  • Support the global organisation on media training and media content.
  • Position and write speaking notes to Secretary General and Director, as well as  other spokespersons in her/their interaction with media and social media.
  • Act as crisis support for situations in Sweden, and countries where Vi Agroforestry operates.
  • Monitor internal and external reputational risk, and report them to the deparment director.
  • Support the Media and Advocacy Director in the strategic development of the department.
  • Be the department lead for digital opinion making and act as an editor for Vi Agroforestry’s main Twitter account.
  • Be in charge of the departments contact lists, fact bank and networking mapping.

 

About you

As a media officer you are a results-oriented optimist that gets the job done, in partnership with other passionate colleagues. You understand how to develop positions in complex thematic areas and map and influence processes pertinent to set goals. In the past or currently, you might be working as a journalist, PR consultant or press secretary for an organisation or company.

You share our values, are committed to political change, and understand what role international development cooperation can play in that process. You need to understand the logic of civil society organisations and have an interest in the cooperative business sector in Sweden. The role comes with high personal responsibility.

 

Required qualifications

  • Degree from relevant education.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant work life experience.
  • Fluent in English and Swedish.

 

Merits

  • Knowledge and experience from working with issues of climate change, agriculture, sustainability and food production, in Sweden and globally.
  • Experience of international development cooperation.
  • Experience from working with national politics in Sweden.
