Office/Unit/Project Description The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) is responsible for positioning UNDP as the world’s leading global development network, promoting its global authority and thought leadership on sustainable development and the interconnected issues of poverty, inequality, and climate change. BERA leads and supports UNDP to build and nurture strategic relationships and alliances essential to achieving its mission. Creates strong political and financial backing for UNDP by providing partners and supporters with a clear understanding of what UNDP does and how our mission, capabilities and flagship services relate to them.
BERA leads UNDP’s work on innovative and diversified partnerships and ways of financing the Decade of Action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. It is also responsible for global campaigns on critical development issues, which aim to inform government policies, build partnerships around high- impact solutions and inform the public on critical issues. It coordinates and sets corporate standards across partnerships, marketing and communications within UNDP and leads internal communications.
BERA is positioned around three service lines; Public Partnership; Advocacy, Marketing and Communications; and Private and Finance Partners, all working in close collaboration and coordination under the guidance of the Directorate and with the support of the Management Support Unit and Strategic Analysis and Engagement team.
The Advocacy, Marketing and Communications Group (AMCG) leads and manages external communications through strategy, media, digital communications, marketing, branding and global storytelling. In 2021 AMCG launched a successful global campaign on climate and inequality, Don’t Choose Extinction, which will continue to run until November 2022. The campaign requires a consultant to work on messaging and outreach, conceptualise and organize campaign moments, events and strategies, manage timelines and deliverables from external agencies and coordinate with country offices and other Bureaux to ensure impactful global campaigns. They will also liaise with other UN agencies.
Institutional ArrangementThe consultant will be working under the direct supervision of the Campaigns and Partnership Manger and overall guidance of the Senior Management of the Advocacy, Marketing and Communications Group in BERA.
Duties and Responsibilities
Scope of Work• Support the conceptualization and implementation of campaigns strategies with multiple target audiences.• Create and update campaign messaging across the three themes of the External Engagement Plan – inequality, climate change and crisis – with strong emphasis on Climate and Inequality, for different audiences, particularly for general and youth audiences.• Manage and develop an external engagement strategy for key partners, creating impact reports and ensuring regular communications and feedback mechanisms.• Help create and manage media partnerships including free “paid media”, editorial content and events.• Initiate, draft, edit, and pitch communications materials, including messaging, Q&As, op- eds, letters to the editors, press kits, fact sheets, infographics and multimediaproducts.• Create funding proposals for internal and external partners.• Help manage outreach to UNDP Country Offices for communications and advocacy products and initiatives.
Competencies
Required skills• Superior written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex development concepts and recommendations in a clear and persuasive manner that is tailored to a range of audiences;• Proven ability to organize high level events, both in terms of content and logistics;• Proven ability to work to deadlines is required;• Understanding of different communications tools;• Excellent knowledge of international media, social media tools and applications;• Demonstrated understanding and ability of effective outreach and monitoring;• Proven networking skills and ability to interact with staff at all levels, including senior management;• Proven ability to shape messages and stories for media placement;• Proven ability to coordinate multi stakeholder engagement;
Desired skills • Communications or campaigns experience preferably• Knowledge of campaigning strategies in relation to climate and inequality• Knowledge of procurement particles and procedures.
Required Language(s)Fluency in written and spoken English. Working Knowledge of French or Spanish will be considered an asset
Required Skills and Experience
Min. Education requirementsMaster’s degree in bachelor’s degree in Design, Media, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field is required with minimum 7 years relevant experience, and/or bachelor’s degree in Design, Media, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations with minimum 9 years relevant experience.
Min. years of relevant work experienceMinimum 7 years of work experience in the field of media relations, media campaigns and/or journalism for master’s degree and minimum 9 years work experience for bachelor’s degree is required.
