Overview of position

Under the overall supervision of the Logistics Officer and under the direct supervision of the National Fleet Officer in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia, the successful candidate will be responsible for Barge Captain

Role objectives
  • Operate our client marine vehicles with top priority given to safety passengers and equipment. The staff on board may be between 15 and 30 people. The boat captain may be required to stay with the vessel overnight.

  • May be exposed to different weather conditions and extreme wave conditions which require a high level of decision making.

  • Oversee the loading and unloading of materials and crew.

  • Follow guidelines/checklists/verbal instructions for consistent safety, maintenance, & cleanliness of vessels.

  • Ensure the boat/barge and operation of such is in accordance with MOSS compliance.

  • Fill out vehicle/vessel log sheets and mission checklists.

  • Consistent communications with base personnel during missions.

  • Ensure that any work-related injury to boat crew or damage to boat or threat to security documented in an incident report completed on the same day as the incident and with notification to the fleet manager.

  • Strictly adhere to our client's policies and procedures including prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse and promotion of a respectful work environment.

  • Undertake duty travel when necessary

  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Key competencies

EDUCATION

  • High school degree/certificate with minimum six years of relevant working experience or a university degree with four years of working experience. 

  • Safe driving record 

  • Valid national driver’s license or a boatman driving license

EXPERIENCE

  • At least two years of working experience as a boat driver with safe driving record and operating marine vessels will be considered 

  • Knowledge of boat driving rules and regulations  

  • Skills in minor vehicle repair 

  • Knowledge of cargo storage, vessel maintenance and navigation. 

  • Experience working with UN agencies/ International NGOs/ Fishing companies will be an added advantage. 

  • A demonstrated level of computer literacy an added advantage 

        Knowledge of how to operate HF/VHF radio is required.

         SKILLS

        • Must be organized and have strong eye for details. 

        • Strong swimming skills
