This post is located in the Security and Safety Service. The Security and Safety Service is responsible for providing security to delegates, staff, visiting dignitaries and other visitors. Under the overall command of the Chief of Service, the Senior Security Officer is required to perform armed security functions and reports directly to the Security Sergeant or other supervising officer.

Within delegated authority, the Senior Security Officer may be responsible for the following duties:
• Screens all personnel, packages and vehicles entering the UN complex to ensure authorized access.
• Provides continuous coverage of cameras, telephone and radio communications systems and associated recording units in the Security Operations Center.
• In the event of emergencies and incidents, alerts relevant units and New York City emergency units and dispatch security personnel to the site under the direction of the Supervisors in charge of the Security Operations Center.
• Maintains logs and rosters and initiates chronological logs of events during emergency situations.
• Prepares daily and weekly work schedules and various periodic reports.
• Provides information and directions to all persons associated with the organization.
• Controls pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
• Is alert for any potential or actual breaches of security and any disturbances or unusual activity and reports these immediately.
• Ensures that all UN property being carried from the complex is checked for appropriate documentation.
• Acts as the Primary Officer or Team Leader in the temporary absence of the OIC. This includes, but is not limited to, the responsibility for: preparation of the Platoon/Section/Unit/Squad/Team’s daily and weekly work schedules and various periodic reports, dispatching security personnel to the site, as directed by the Security Operations Center in case of emergency/incident, coaching and mentoring junior officers on post, performing administrative tasks for the Platoon/Unit/Squad/Section, and representing the Unit OIC in the daily operational meetings.
• Performs other related duties, as required.

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must have passed the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT).
Job - Specific Qualification
Officers are required to be in possession of valid host country licenses, including but not limited to:
(1) Handgun License from the Police Department - City of New York (non-revoked); and
(2) Motor vehicle permit from the appropriate issuing authorities within the New York tristate
area.
Five (5) years of experience in security and safety operations with the United Nations or other similar international organization is required.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the positions advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language(s) is desirable.
AssessmentA written assessment test may be administered to applicants followed by a competency based interview for the applicants who pass the written test.
