About Vi Agroforestry in Uganda

Vi Agroforestry (Vi-skogen) is a Swedish development cooperation organisation, fighting poverty and working with sustainable agriculture and land management through agroforestry – growing trees alongside crops and livestock. We do this together with small-holder farming families and farmers’ organisations in four countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda). Agroforestry provides increased access to food, access to sustainable energy sources and more income. Whereas sustainable agriculture land management contributes to the mitigation of climate change and protects against the negative effects of climate change.

Vi Agroforestry is recruiting a Programme Officer ECCR and Food Security to support its work with its partners in the country.

Main responsibilities of the Role

The programme officer- ECCR and Food Security will serve as the lead technical expert for Environment, Climate change and Food Security at Vi Agroforestry. To achieve this the program officer will be responsible for designing innovative and impactful solutions for the Environment, Climate change and natural resource management thematic areas. The job holder will represent Vi Agroforestry’s programming in the sector to major public and private donors, NGOs, universities, and other professional organizations and build and strengthen relationships with these key stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership for Vi Agroforestry’s Program on Environment and Climate change and natural resource management to ensure Vi Agroforestry is a go to expert organization among Uganda -based peer organizations on Agroforestry /provide technical assistance on implementation of SALM and agroforestry practices and conduct training on SALM to farmer-based organizations
  •  Generate and document evidence of proven models, best practices and emerging and innovative practices in Environment, Climate change, Agroforestry and Food security.
  • Support the design and implementation of ECCR & food security activities in line with the annual projects work plans
  • Organize and participate in Vi Agroforestry working groups in the design, development, revision, dissemination and promotion of sector strategies, standards, guidelines, working papers, tools, and training materials.
  • Build Vi Agroforestry’s reputation in Environment, Climate Change and natural resource management through participation in relevant networks, working groups and conferences.
  • Cultivate and strengthen strategic partnerships with Government Ministries, department and agencies various donor agencies and institutions and research institutions), locally to increase our Visibility.
  • Provide technical oversight of Agroforestry, Climate change and natural resource management components of projects and portfolios.
  • Develop field-focused tools and guidance manuals and build capacities of partners’ staff teams to effectively implement Climate smart agriculture and natural resource management activities and conduct gender responsive SALM training
  • Build capacity of partner teams to confirms Do no harm and conflict sensitivity analysis.
  • Provide technical support in proposal writing for projects related to ECCR and food security.
  • Ensure the cross-cutting aspects such as gender equity, social inclusion and HRBA are well integrated into SALM approaches.

 Required qualifications

o   Preferably an advanced degree in agriculture/agroforestry, environmental management, climate change or other relevant disciplines and a minimum of five years of relevant and professional work experience.

o   A minimum of five years of relevant and professional work experience.

o   Experience in execution of double and triple Nexus projects

o   Strong oral and written communication skills in English

o   High level skills in report writing and presentations.

o   Working experience in agricultural Business/Value Chain Development and food security.

o   Having proven work experience in project/program management.

o   Practical experience on gender, youth and innovation in agriculture

 Merits as an added advantage

o   Conversant with the concepts of gender equity, Do No Harm and Conflict Sensitivity

o   Experience in working in international teams

o   Proven experience in Communication and Innovation

o   Familiar with various web-based platforms

o   Excellent writing, research, communication, and interpersonal skills
