OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To contribute to the prevention andcontrol of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), with special focus on polioeradication/endgame, measles elimination, neonatal tetanus elimination andrubella control.To establish sustainable systems of (a)ensuring access to immunization against diseases of major public healthimportance; and (b) integrating vaccine preventable disease surveillance.To promote vaccine qualityassurance from production through delivery, including the development of newand underutilized vaccines.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the overall guidanceof Director, CDS and direct supervision of Coordinator (COVAX, IVD) theincumbent will carry out the following duties:Develops and implementsinnovative programmatic approaches and plans tosupport WHO country offices and Member States in sustaining comprehensive surveillancefor vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs), especially in the context of thedecline in surveillance performance following the COVID-19 pandemic. Monitorsperformance of VPD surveillance in Member States of the Region in accordancewith the standards laid down in the Regional guidelines for VPD surveillance, andprovides support on strengthening systems for VPD surveillance, includingdevelopment of tools for monitoring performance by Member StatesSupportsperiodic analysis of VPD surveillance data and provides technical support on useof the surveillance data for refinements of strategies and interventions tocontrol/eliminate VPDs in Member States Usesdisease surveillance information to help Member States to identify pockets ofun-immunized children and priority geographical areas for improving immunizationcoverage, as well for investigation and timely response to vaccine preventablediseases outbreaksFacilitatesuse of surveillance data to inform programmatic decisions for introduction ofnew vaccines Enhancescapacity for collection, management, analyses and use of data on rotavirus,invasive bacterial diseases and Japanese EncephalitisCoordinateswith the laboratory focal point in IVD/SEARO to support laboratories involvedwith VPDs, such as IBD, rotavirus, JE, diphtheria, surveillance in SEARcountries.Other tasks as assigned by the supervisorsSubmit anassignment report after completion of the assignment. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Postgraduate degree in Medicine from recognized university
Desirable: Mastersin Public Health/Epidemiology/Communicable Diseases from a recognizeduniversity

Experience

Essential: At least seven years of experience in area of public health, including few years of demonstrated international exposure/experience
Desirable: Experienceof planning, implementing, monitoring vaccine-preventable disease surveillanceat national level

Skills

Expertisein planning and evaluation of public health programmes, including experience invaccine preventable disease control and immunization

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 75,602 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2249 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
