Uzbekistan: Translation and Communications Intern (Nukus)

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), headquartered in Seoul, Republic of Korea, is an intergovernmental organization founded to support and promote a model of economic growth known as green growth; which targets key aspects of economic performance such as poverty reduction and job creation, as well as social inclusion and environmental sustainability. GGGI works with countries around the world, building their capacity and working collaboratively on green growth policies that can impact the lives of millions. The organization partners with countries, multilateral institutions, government bodies, and the private sector to help build economies that achieve strong growth and are less carbon-intensive, more resilient to climate change, and more efficient and sustainable in the use of natural resources.

BACKGROUND

GGGI is implementing a project funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) entitled: “Green Rehabilitation Investment Project for Karakalpakstan Republic to address impacts of the Aral Sea Crisis (Aral Sea GRIP)”. The project partner districts in Karakalpakstan are Bozatau, Chimbay, Karauzyak and Kegeyli.

The GGGI Uzbekistan Country Office (CO) is hosted by the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection (SCEEP) in its building in Tashkent, and has a field office in Nukus, embedded within the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Karakalpakstan

GGGI’s Internship Program aims to provide project-oriented learning opportunities for students and recent graduates (within the last 12 months) to gain experience through specific assignments based on GGGI’s current operational needs. GGGI welcomes motivated, open-minded, and self-directed to apply. You will be given an opportunity to work directly with outstanding and inspiring Green Growth professionals, participate in workshops and meetings, and contribute to analytical work as well as innovative interventions for green growth.

    • Duration of Initial Contract: 6 Months
    • Stipend: A monthly stipend of USD$500 per month

 

INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVE

The internship position will be with the GGGI Project office in Nukus. The intern will work directly with the 3-person project team of Aral Sea GRIP based in Nukus: The 1) Associate for Climate-Resilient Agricultural Technologies, 2) Associate for Climate-Smart Agriculture, 3) Associate for Gender and Social Inclusion.

Under the direct supervision of the Associate for Gender and Social Inclusion in Nukus s/he will support implementation of the Aral Sea GRIP Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, the Country Office Communication Plan and the Capacity Development (CD) plan, which targets 31 000 beneficiaries. The intern will support project translation and communication tasks. More specifically, s/he will:

Project Components 2 & 3: Capacity Development (CD)

    • Edit the Russian translations of the CD plan booklet and poster and translate them into Karakalpak
    • Translate CD training materials (PowerPoint presentations, scripts, trainers’ workbook, workshop materials) from Russian or English into Karakalpak
    • Support GGGI and consultants with the development of the trainers’ workbooks for the topics Climate Change, Health, Climate-Smart Farming & Agrobusiness Development
    • Support GGGI with the development of attractive and interactive training materials for the topics Greenhouses with Drip Irrigation and Agroforestry with Drip Irrigation
    • Proofread and edit CD training materials in multiple languages
    • Support editing of CD training materials to fit diverse target groups (youth, young women, women, farmers)
    • Interpret Russian-Karakalpak or English-Karakalpak between the GGGI gender specialist and trainers (in person, during online meetings, and on the phone)
    • Support trainer coordination and training organisation
    • Support management of the database of training participants by collecting and processing participation lists from trainings, and assessing their impacts
    • Support information dissemination via Telegram in Karakalpak
    • Support the GGGI intern in Tashkent with content development for press releases, newsletters, and/or web and social- media posts
    • Work together with the GGGI intern in Tashkent on data visualization (creating infographics and visual reports)
    • Assist in producing, obtaining, and managing high-quality photos and video clips

Other

    • Translate materials for the GGGI Aral Sea GRIP Business Development Platform into Karakalpak
    • Edit and proofread letters and project documents into Karakalpak
    • Other tasks as required by the Country Office.
ELIGIBILITY

Applicants to this internship must at the time of application meet the following requirements:

    • Be fluent in Karakalpak and Russian, both written and spoken; Have at least good conversational English skills.
    • Be enrolled in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or PhD program prior to internship assignment, or be a recent graduate within the last 12 months. Master’s or PhD student preferred.
    • Be engaged or recently engaged in academic study in a field directly related to the Institute’s work
    • Have majored in relevant fields such as Translation, Philology, Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, ICT, International Development, or other related fields, and, if selected, must be able to start the internship immediately
    • Have at least good computer literacy in standard Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and graphic design software applications (photo and video editing)
    • A personal or professional background in agriculture or education is a plus
    • Being from one of the project areas Bozatau, Chimbay, Karauzyak, or Kegeyli is a plus

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
    • Duration: The internship program is for at least three months and up to six months. Once selected, interns must begin the internship either prior to or within 12 months of graduation. 
    • Stipend: GGGI interns receive a monthly stipend of USD $500 per month (unless agreed to be funded by sponsoring institutions). All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by either the interns themselves or sponsoring institutions.  
    • Visa: GGGI will provide a supporting letter for visa. Interns will be responsible for obtaining and financing the necessary visas.  
    • Travel: Intern will arrange and finance their travel to the internship location.  
    • Medical Insurance: Interns must present proof of valid medical insurance to GGGI upon returning the signed internship contract.
    • Confidentiality: Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any documents based on such information.  
    • Academic Credit: Interns may get academic credit from their institution of higher education for the internship. Interns need to check with their university to confirm their academic credit policy for internships.  
    • Working Hours: interns are expected to work during normal working hours. Leave should be pre-approved by the Intern Manager, and the latter should inform the Office of HR accordingly.
    • Learning Outcomes: before completion of the internship, Intern Managers are expected to review the learning outcomes with the intern.
    • Certificate: provided upon successful completion of the internship, upon request.
