Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. FAO’s goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. We believe that everyone can play a part in ending hunger. FAO in Bangladesh has been implementing activities in close cooperation with the Government of Bangladesh since its establishment in 1978.

The tasks envisaged for this consultancy are to be carried out through the Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD), which is currently implementing several projects in various countries in Africa. Within the ECTAD framework, the Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) is closely working with the Emergency and Resilience Division (PSE) under the Strategic Program 5 to support various aspects of the animal health programme of FAO, including the Emerging Pandemic Threats (EPT-2) and Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) Programmes.


Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative (FAOR) in Bangladesh, the direct supervision of the ECTAD Country Team Leader, and in close collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh and implementing partners supporting the FAO ECTAD programme activities in Bangladesh:


Technical Focus

Provide data analysis, geographic information system (GIS), and visualization support to the FAO-supported information management initiatives the, including the Bangladesh Animal Health Intelligence System (BAHIS), the antimicrobial sensitivity test (AST) portal, and the integrated respiratory disease surveillance system


Tasks and responsibilities

• Clean data from various projects hosted by BAHIS (e.g., U2C farm assessment, SINK surveillance, patient registry) and cross-reference current and historical data.
• Develop a data visualization dashboard prototype for BAHIS in Python or R-shiny, including GIS-based maps
• Review functionality of current means to export data and identify improvements in the process
• Review GIS data structures used in different projects (e.g., BAHIS, AST) and propose a way of managing geographic mapping amongst them
• Take part in technical meetings related to information management projects, providing feedback focused on data quality, collection, and formatting.
• Perform other related duties as required.


CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING


Minimum Requirements

• Advanced degree in environmental science or related fields;
• Experience in data analysis in Python or R or similar languages
• Experience working with GIS, particularly open source applications
• Familiarity with relational database concepts
• Working knowledge of English and Bengali is required.
• Nationality of Bangladesh.
