Mission and objectives

Sustainable Human Development involves a process of enlarging people’s choices by expanding their capabilities and opportunities in ways that are sustainable from the economic, social and environmental standpoints, benefiting the present without compromising the future. UNDP has defined its agenda for the future around three interconnected challenges: to invest in and amplify the positive momentum of expanded people’s voice and unprecedented participation, brought about by movements towards more inclusive and effective democratic governance across the globe, and access to new technologies and knowledge; to capitalize on this momentum to pursue economic growth and development pathways that can tackle the connected issues of poverty, inequality and exclusion, while ensuring environmental sustainability; and to put in place measures to build resilience to crises and prevent loss of development gains through reducing the likelihood of conflict, and mitigating the risks of natural disasters, including from climate change. Responding to transition in the region

Context

Commissioned by the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States (UNDP RBAS), the regional framework outlines the main elements of a strategic approach to sustaining peace through insider mediation. The framework includes the background, rationale, objectives, guiding principles, key outputs and outcomes, and implementation guidelines to both raise awareness regarding the vital role Insider Mediators play in preventing and resolving conflicts and to serve as the basis for further consultations with: UNDP Headquarters and Country Offices; UN Secretariat entities, in particular the UN Department for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, and the Department of Peace Operations; Agencies, Funds and Programmes working on or in support of insider mediation; civil society organisations and think-tanks working in this space, particularly at the regional level; and, particularly, with IM themselves. Therefore, the framework needs to be cogent, accessible, and user-friendly. Currently, the framework is a 41-page Word document and requires final editing to prepare it for dissemination. With input and guidance from the Governance and Peacebuilding Team at the Regional Hub, the volunteer will be asked to overview and edit the final version.

Task description
