Are you a Researcher that would love to apply your legal skills to improve human rights? We are currently recruiting for an exciting role as a Researcher, Right to Protest in South Asia!

This role is a 24-month fixed term contract and is based in London/Colombo. Please note, the salary will depend on the location.

JOB PURPOSE

The post holder will lead and shape a project on right to protest in South Asia, in order to scrutinise, challenge, interrogate and expose human rights risks/violations in the region using qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Co-develop a strategic research and investigations plan with the project team, investigating the human rights concerns impacting FoE, FoA and peaceful assembly in South Asia, with a view to gathering evidence of human rights abuses;
  • Lead the process to hire, and manage consultants, interns, and research and advocacy partners to execute the research and investigation project;
  • Manage the evidence gathering, consultations, interviews and triangulation of data;
  • Manage technical aspects of the research projects from conceptualisation through to publications and launch; keep projects on track to reach pre-defined milestones; participate in crisis response as needed in order to contribute to the overall smooth running of the project;

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in a human rights research role, with experience in South Asia preferably with a heavy research and/or investigations component;
  • Advanced Degree or equivalent qualifications/experience in law or social sciences;
  • Demonstrated experience, including evidence of published papers or research demonstrating experience in investigative research methods, field research, managing research projects with multiple contributors as well as a clear interest in developing or experimenting with new investigations techniques; experience in gathering data from inaccessible and difficult sources;
  • Strong technical understanding of the international human rights law framework on FoE, FoA and peaceful assembly along with a strong understanding of the domestic human rights obligations under common law and domestic laws in South Asia;
  • Experience in conducting field research, contacts and networks with civil society groups in the region and leading a research project with multiple consultants, research objectives and over spanning several years;

The successful candidate in this role will be fluent in English (written and spoken essential) and fluent in a regional South Asian language.
