CHAI is seeking either a Senior Associate or a Manager, Special Projects and Strategy to CHAI’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Due to the unique nature of this role, the hiring team is open to considering candidates at the Senior Associate or Managerial level and would align the responsibilities to be commensurate with the final decision on job title. This position will be based in the United States or within three hours of the PST time zone. The role requires approximately 25% travel on average, with higher travel up to 40% required in the first 12 months after assuming the position. The role will report directly to CHAI’s CEO.


The Senior Associate/Manager, Special Projects and Strategy will work very closely with the CEO, both as a strategic thought partner to the CEO and in driving execution of everything in the CEO’s portfolio. The Senior Associate/Manager, Special Projects and Strategy to will have the challenging and exciting responsibility of working with the CEO to both maintain an aerial view of the entire organization and its long-term impact, while also having incredible attention to detail and energy to drive forward execution. This is a role for someone who is able and excited to switch seamlessly between rolling up their sleeves to get things done across many workstreams while also being able to step back to provide thought partnership on big picture organizational opportunities and challenges. The Senior Associate/Manager, Special Projects and Strategy will have a wide-ranging set of expectations, including undertaking key strategic analyses, support the launch of new initiatives, develop high-priority board and donor content, and drive the execution and coordination of top organizational priorities with the CEO and Senior Leadership. The Senior Associate/Manager, Special Projects and Strategy will be critical to ensuring CHAI continues to measurably improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

Responsibilities

Big Picture and Special Projects – research, writing, analysis, and thought partnership to inform CHAI’s forward-looking strategy (40%)

  • Support early-stage exploration, development and, if warranted, execution of key organizational initiatives in close collaboration with the CEO and relevant members of leadership. These will vary based on shifting priorities but may include topics such as: researching the academic literature and market analysis to inform entry into new lines of work; researching best practices and developing tailored operational plans for how to strengthen organizational culture, values, and morale; development of cross-organizational strategy initiatives, etc.
  • Support the development of new initiatives and org-wide and departmental strategies in collaboration with relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Executive-level presentations and writing - work with the Communications team on thought leadership and sector influence such as drafting op-eds, thought leadership pieces, and presentations at conferences.

High-quality execution – Coordination, liaising, and driving execution with Leadership team, Board of Directors and external partners (40%)

  • Serve as liaison between the CEO, Board of Directors, CHAI senior leadership, country and program leaders, and operational departments, regarding program and project updates, donor relations and enterprise-wide strategic initiatives and planning.
  • Plan content and oversee execution of all Board meetings, leadership team meetings and more to ensure key enterprise-wide issues are discussed and clear outcomes are identified. E.g.,
    • CHAI Leadership meetings:
      • Schedule, manage, organize, and distribute meeting content and track deliverables from meetings of all CHAI Leadership Teams – SLT, OLT, PLT and special committees (E.g., DEI).
      • Work with leadership teams to ensure timely execution of key strategic initiatives, collaborating across programmatic and operations teams.
  • Join most calls (internal and external) and selected travel with CEO in order to effectively serve as a thought partner to CEO and to ensure critically triaging and high-quality follow-through on all action items.
  • Other duties as assigned (ex. logistics and support for leadership or BOD meetings).

Logistical support (20%)

  • Manage the shared Operations Associate who will be responsible for all scheduling and logistics. E.g.,
    • Manage the CEO’s schedule, planning travel and scheduling Board and Leadership meetings.
    • Plan, coordinate, and keep meetings focused and coordinated including preparing written materials and communication, and other tasks, as assigned.
  • Overall support: dynamically provide support and gap-filling as needed on cross-cutting organizational initiatives to enable the CEO to focus on running the organization. The above responsibilities will be carried out by working closely with the CEO, COO, CFO, SLT, PLT, OLT, country leadership and Board.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-7 years of professional experience. We are more interested in finding the person with the right aptitude and excitement for this role, rather than a predefined years or set of experiences, and so are open to a range of experience/seniority in order to find the right fit.
  • Experience in management consulting, equity research, or strategy development strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience working remotely with a decentralized team and working in or supporting a CHAI country office highly desired.
  • Exceptional research, writing and strategic analysis skills:
    • Able to synthesize learnings from diverse sources ranging from academic literature to conversations with internal and external experts to one’s own experience in order to arrive at recommendations and plans on special initiatives.
  • Proven ability to work efficiently and independently in a fast-paced environment. Comfort managing many ongoing, complex workstreams to completion at any given time with minimal supervision:
    • Project/process management: Managing projects and building new processes which require inputs from a diverse set of stakeholders.
    • Independent multitasking: Ability to work independently, across multiple efforts, and to concisely present findings and recommendations to the CEO.
    • Willingness and flexibility to take on all tasks and get into the details.
  • Exceptional representative of CHAI both internally and externally:
    • Deep understanding and commitment to CHAI’s work, culture, and values is required; the ideal candidate must embody CHAI’s values in their day-to-day work managing the matrix.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills, and ability to manage complex relationships including with very senior external counterparts
    • Demonstrable ability to collaborate well with CHAI leadership
  •  Ability to manage sensitive information and communications with discretion
  • Exceptional at producing content in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
