CIP Malawi and partners has been implementing a project namely, Root and Tuber Crops for Agricultural Development in Malawi (RTC-ACTION) from 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2022. The project was part of Irish Aid’s Strategy for Malawi (2016-20), with a focus on improving food security, nutrition and income for a target of 160,000 small holder farmers in 22 districts of Malawi. The key crops were cassava, potato and sweetpotato. The project is currently in a bridging year (1st April 2022 to 31st March 2023) where one of the deliverables is a strategy developed for effective and efficient integration of RTCs in the Malawi food basket. The reason is that there is a wide range of policy and program tools and strategies for addressing hunger and under¬nutrition in Malawi. CIP and partners intend to effectively participate in these initiatives. The CIP strategy will guide the entry point through the identified gaps, opportunities, potential synergies and priority areas for research, policy actions and investment with focus to RTC in the food system.

Objectives:
  • To evaluate and develop approaches to improve the nutritional status of women and children under the age of five through dietary diversification and increased utilization of root and tuber crops in the food system

Activities:

  • Conduct a desk review on the available nutrition policies and guidelines, opportunities, successes, and lessons learnt from other initiatives that will allow increased RTC utilization at household and national level
  • Participate in the designing of the study approach for effective RTC utilization and develop a comprehensive Social Behavioral Change Communication strategy that is aimed at increasing the utilization of RTCs in diets. The study output should include:
    • Best practices from the evaluation of RTC nutrition approaches implemented by CIP, IITA and other partners in Malawi and other sub-Saharan countries identified.
    • Organizations and development programs involved in nutritional work (e.g through school feeding programs and care groups) identified.
    • Approaches developed and entry-points identified to include RTC nutrition work in larger agriculture and nutrition programs in Malawi (e.g though facilitating linkages between seed systems activities and nutrition programs, training of trainers (TOT) of partners, awareness creation campaigns).
    • A comprehensive program developed to promote a mindset change to ensure RTCs and other non-maize-based foods can be considered as important household foods.
    • Participatory evaluation of various RTC-based recipes and products conducted with urban consumers to understand different urban household’s consumer preferences.
    • Action plan to promote packaging, marketing and utilization of RTC on fresh markets in urban areas developed.
    • Strategy developed to promote suitable and healthy processed products derived from RTC (e.g. bread, crisps, biscuits, flour, other) to urban consumers.
