Based in Seoul, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is an intergovernmental organization founded to support members and partner countries transform their economies towards a “green growth” economic model, which is low carbon, environmentally sustainable, climate resilient and socially inclusive. GGGI works with Member and partner countries around the world, building their capacity and working collaboratively on green growth policies and investments that impact the lives of millions through climate mitigation and adaptation benefits. The organization partners with over 40 countries, multilateral institutions, government bodies, and private sector to deliver its vision, mandate and country and regional programs.

CURRENT OPPORTUNITY

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a founding member of GGGI, and the GGGI PNG Country Program was established in 2018 with its main office based at the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA), in Port Moresby. In close partnership and collaboration with CCDA, GGGI is an implementing partner of the Climate Resilient Green Growth (CRGG) project, which is fully funded by the Australian Government, to support the Government of PNG to plan for climate resilient green growth in multiple sectors and deliver green growth projects with leveraged green investments and climate finance. Recently, GGGI has started a new Green Climate Fund (GCF) readiness project called “Strengthening NDA Capacity on Project Evaluation and Development of Climate Finance Strategy to Enhance Papua New Guinea’s Access to Climate Finance”. GGGI implements its country program in various target sectors aimed to transform PNG’s economy into a green growth model that also meets its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) commitments.

We are looking for a talented individual to work with us as an Intern in the GGGI PNG Country Program with a focus on climate action and climate finance.

The assignment will include (but not limited to) the following:

    • Support in proposal development through data collection/compilation, research, technical review and assessment of various sectors including forestry, energy, sustainable agricultural value chains, transport, and carbon trading;
    • Undertake desktop research to analyze challenges and opportunities in relevant sectors mentioned above and develop a situational analysis or preliminary report; 
    • Engage with various stakeholders and government officials associated with the above-mentioned sectors as part of data collection, research and validation;
    • Support in drafting project idea notes, concept notes, and proposals;
    • Support in preparation and coordination of technical assessments, meetings, organizing workshops/trainings/site visits and other day-to-day operational activities related to these sectors including preparation of meeting reports and summary notes;
    • Provide broader support to the GGGI PNG Country Program.
    • Undertake any other tasks that may be assigned from time to time.

 

ELIGIBILITY                                               

 Applicants to the GGGI internship program must at the time of application meet the following requirements:

    • Be enrolled in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or PhD program prior to internship assignment, or a recent graduate within the last 12 months.
    • Be engaged or recently engaged in academic study in a field directly related to the Institute’s work
    • Possess an excellent command of spoken and written English.

 

QUALIFICATION
    • Education in economics, environmental management, energy, sustainable development, forestry or related fields is desirable.
    • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds
    • Experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods and data analysis; research and analytical skills including an ability to analyze, integrate and summarize information from a wide range of sources.
    • Experience in research and report writing is an advantage.
    • Proven computer literacy in standard office software applications skills
    • Experience working or volunteering on topics related to environmental issues is a plus

 

SELECTION PROCESS
    • Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
    • GGGI evaluates applications based on: eligibility requirements, relevance of academic study and work experience (if any); and the level of interest and motivation to contribute to development work.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
    • Duration: The internship program is for at least three months and up to six months. Once selected, interns must begin your internship either prior to or within 12 months of graduation.  
    • Stipend: GGGI interns receive a monthly stipend of USD $500 per month (unless agreed to be funded by sponsoring institutions). All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by either the interns themselves or sponsoring institutions.   
    • Visa: GGGI will provide a supporting letter for visa. Interns will be responsible for obtaining and financing the necessary visas.   
    • Travel: Intern will arrange and finance their travel to the internship location.   
    • Medical Insurance: Interns must present proof of valid medical insurance to GGGI upon returning the signed internship contract. 
    • Confidentiality: Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any documents based on such information.   
    • Academic Credit: Interns may get academic credit from their institution of higher education for the internship. Interns need to check with their university to confirm their academic credit policy for internships.   
    • Working Hours: interns are expected to work during normal working hours. Leave should be pre-approved by the Intern Manager, and the latter should inform the Office of HR accordingly. 
    • Learning Outcomes: before completion of the internship, Intern Managers are expected to review the learning outcomes with the intern. 
    • Certificate: provided upon successful completion of the internship, upon request.
