1.     Organizational Context

 

  1. Organizational Setting

 

The post is located in the News and Media Division in the Office of the Director General.  The Division is responsible for creating and disseminating colorful storytelling and informational content to reach new audiences via the Organization's social-media and other platforms, as well as through outreach to press outlets across the globe.

 

The goal of the Division's activities is to implement a media strategy for the Organization that is designed to illustrate how the use of intellectual property (IP), including through WIPO's support, promotes human and community development in the pursuit of a world where IP-backed innovation and creativity from anywhere can benefit everyone.

 

  1. Purpose Statement

 

The incumbent will be a passionate storyteller who can visualize and illustrate the critical interplay among complex technical, political and legal matters and the daily expression of human ingenuity that has driven progress through history. The incumbent will contribute to WIPO's content-creation and distribution efforts meant to attract the attention of people worldwide to show how IP can helps individuals, enterprises and communities grow, while addressing shared challenges like climate change.

 

  1. Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Senior Media Officer of the News and Media Division.

 

 

2.      Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

 

a.   Create high-level content such as articles/features, video scripts, press releases, news items, podcasts and other material suitable for promotion via WIPO's social media and other channels, including material and story pitches that may also be used for dissemination in outside media across the globe.

 

b.   Optimize the promotion of new content, including through the preparation of social media posts.

 

c.   Participate in strategizing how to evolve the Organization's media strategy.

 

d.   Develop new platform and audience-specific content products to reach people who have been historically underserved by the IP system, such as SMEs, women and youth.

 

e.   Develop, establish and maintain effective partnerships with media outlets to stimulate coverage of the critical role played by IP in human development, including the support of WIPO and its activities; ensure that media responses are aligned with the Organization’s messaging priorities.

 

f.    Substantively contribute to enhancing WIPO’s presence on social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram and others) and to the coordination and implementation of WIPO’s evolving social media use.

 

g.   Monitor and analyze the ongoing performance of the Organization’s media impact and contribute to the creation of appropriate action/responses.

 

h.   Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

3.      Requirements

 

Education (Essential)

First-level university degree in communications, journalism, social sciences or a related subject.

 

Experience (Essential)

At least six years of relevant professional experience in journalism, media relations, external communication or related sectors.

 

On-the-ground storytelling and content creation experience in developing economy contexts.

 

Experience in creating and tailoring content for ever-shifting social media/digital storytelling trends in order to reach youth audiences and digital natives.

 

Practical experience in using social media to support strategic communications objectives.

 

Experience (Desirable)

Demonstrated experience in use of Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.

 

Experience in using commercial social media management platforms, like Hootsuite.

 

Experience in in-studio productions - directing interviews and program development.

 

Language (Essential)

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.

 

Language (Desirable)

Good knowledge of French.

Ability to present complex issues in succinct and accessible language.  Ability to tailor expression and messages for different audiences and media.

 

Knowledge of social media platforms and social media best practices.

Ability to create and edit visuals (such as with Photoshop, Canva, etc.).

5.      Information

 

Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  Please note that this estimate is for information only.  The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the July 2022 rate of 73.5%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Additional Information

 

Initial fixed-term appointment of two years, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and other applicable conditions.  The selected candidate will be subject to an overall term of five years with no possibility of renewal beyond that term. This is not applicable to WIPO staff members on fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointments, who were recruited following a competition under Staff Regulation 4.10 (“Appointment Boards”).
