Heavy Driver vehicles for Ukrainian Crisis

Introduction

Are you a professional Heavy Driver looking to make a change with the work you do? We have an opportunity for your consideration. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) seeks to recruit qualified candidates to support our operation linked to the Ukrainian Crises.

This is a position directly based in our international field, we are looking for professionals with a strong humanitarian motivation who are willing to be located in one of our international offices in Hungary and/or Ukraine (or other surrounding countries), to help people affected by armed conflict and other violence.
 

What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian protection and assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and their International Federation to ensure a concerted, rational, and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The Heavy Vehicles Driver transports goods and people safely and promptly, per ICRC rules and regulations and national traffic laws.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

• Drives trucks and other vehicles strictly to internal security rules and national traffic laws; drives efficiently to minimize fuel consumption and use of material.
• Constantly monitors security conditions on the road.
• Is accountable for the cargo under their supervision, from signing the waybill to delivery.
• Loads and unloads the truck or supervises loading and unloading.
• Ensures that goods are stored inside the vehicle according to local, international, and ICRC safety standards (attachment and distribution of goods, use of pallets, etc.).
• Checks their assigned vehicle(s)' equipment, general functioning, and body condition and ensures that it is kept fuelled and clean inside and out.
• Checks that trips have been authorized where necessary.
• Immediately reports accidents, defects, and missing equipment to management.
• Can act as head of the convoy as needed (in charge of the driver(s), application of security rules, and time frame for the convoy).

Relationships

• Internally, interacts mainly with logistics staff and other ICRC employees.
• Externally, interacts with people related to their work, e.g., traffic police, weapon bearers at checkpoints, fuel-station personnel, etc. May interact with beneficiaries on rare occasions.

Certifications / Education required

• Driving license B, C, D, E and license to pull 40-MT trailers (CE).
• Secondary school diploma.
• Good oral and written communication skills (minimum B2 Level) in English
• Knowledge (spoken and written) of Ukrainian and/or Russian is a strong asset

Professional Experience required

• Minimum five years of experience as a truck driver with 40-MT trailers (License CE) is mandatory.
• The previous working experience must be recent (at least two years).
• The ability to change a tire and carry out other minor repairs (e.g., change light bulbs) on the road is mandatory.
• Experience driving on mountain roads during winter is a strong asset.
• Experience in risk analysis and security situation check is an asset.
• Experience in driving on the right side of the roads is an asset

Desired profile and skills

• Strongly motivated by humanitarian work 
• Able to work under pressure in a potentially dangerous environment.
• Able to drive into conflict areas.

Our operational & field constraints

• In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country in which they are nationals.
• Candidates must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure into the field.
• Candidates must possess a driving license (for manual transmission vehicles)
• Candidates must be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e., no spouse, partner, children, or dependents) for at least the first 24 months.
