Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Human Resources Management Section (HRMS), Programme Support and Management Service (PSMS) in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The intern reports to a Human Resources Officer and the Chief of Human Resources.

The internship is for three months, but can be extended 6 for a maximum period of six months. Interns work full time - five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the team. The internship is UNPAID and travel costs, travel arrangements (including visas) and living accommodations are the responsibility of the intern.

Responsibilities

The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

• Conducts research on a diverse range of talent management and staff development issues using multiple sources; selects relevant material, analyses information and presents findings for internal review;
• Supports the gathering, consolidating, and analysing data for tracking, analytics, and data visualization using Excel, Power BI, and other business intelligence tools;
• Develops data input, files/database structures, data transformation, algorithms, and data output using appropriate computer language/tools to provide technical solutions for complex application development tasks;
• Supports the development and revision of talent management policies;
• Assists in preparing background documentation, drafting correspondence, reports and presentations;
• Participates in meetings and seminars and serves as secretary, as necessary (takes notes, draft summary reports, minutes, notes for the files or assessment reports for presentation to the head of the Section); monitors follow-up actions, etc.
• Reviews staff development project comments/evaluations and progress reports, summarizes findings and lessons learned;
• Assists in designing, organizing, planning and managing the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation, reporting and dissemination of statistical data for talent management purposes;
• Creates graphically engaging presentations and materials;
• Develops visual solutions derived from multiple data sources to enable insight and decision-making at various levels;
• Innovates ways to disseminate and socialize talent management policy content;
• Shows initiative and propose new ways of implementing talent management solutions;
• Perform other activities and special projects as assigned.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

1) Applicants must:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or;
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Interested candidates must be pursuing or pursued their degree in areas related to Human Resources, Law, Public or Business Administration, Management, Strategy, International Relations, or similar.

2) Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point);
3) Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
4) Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Fluency in spoken and written French is desirable. Knowledge of other UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish) is desirable.

Working hours: Interns must adhere to the established weekly working hours of the duty station where the assignment is located though not exceeding five days per week (35 hours) and a one hours lunch break.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
