Purpose of consultancy

The consultant will contribute to the work of the World Hearing Forum through:

  • monitoring and expanding the membership base of the World Hearing Forum
  • undertaking literature review and scientific paper development relevant to work of the World Hearing Forum.

Background

Prevention of deafness and hearing loss and promotion of ear and hearing care was highlighted in 2015 and a resolution (WHA70.13) was unanimously adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2017. This resolution calls upon WHO to “intensify collaboration with all stakeholders with the aim of reducing hearing loss due to recreational exposure to noise through the development and promotion of safe-listening standards, screening protocols, software applications to promote safe-listening and information products.”

Towards this end WHO established in 2019 the World Hearing Forum. The Forum is a global alliance undertaking advocacy for prioritization of hearing care. It has 195 members and four working groups. The work of the four working groups supports WHO’s priorities and is evidence-based. Each of the working groups has a workplan. Since the previous workplan is now coming to a close it is expected that each group will develop a new workplan in 2022, with specific indicators and targets.
