With its portfolio in Asia Malteser International is linking relief, rehabilitation and development and is implementing programs focussing mainly on Health, Livelihood, Protection and WASH.

To support the safety and security of our staff and operations in Asia, Malteser International is looking for a South Asia and/or Southeast Asia-based Safety and Security Advisor.

As Safety and Security Advisor (SSA) you will focus on the operational mechanisms of organizational safety and security policies and ensure processes are up to date, communicated and effectively socialized within Malteser International regional teams. You will lead on strategic and operational management of safety and security for Malteser International staff and support the set-up of safety and security plans and crisis management plans. Furthermore, you will support the capacity building of Malteser International staff in safety and security procedures.

Your responsibilities:

  • Conduct safety and security audits and risk assessments of Malteser International project locations and propose mitigation measures and recommendations for improvement.
  • Support field offices to maintain up-to-date Security Plans, Standard Operating Procedures and Contingency Plans in accordance with Malteser International´s security guidelines.
  • Ensure capacity strengthening for Malteser International staff and partners and develop a culture of security risk awareness across Malteser International operations in Asia.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to a systematic approach of focal persons in safety and security in Asia.
  • Monitor evolutions in Malteser Internationals working environment (political, security, and economic situations in the countries Malteser International is operating) and share regular context updates
  • Advise, liaise and support the headquarters, field offices and local humanitarian partners in managing safety and security, crisis management, incident management and post incident management.
  • Maintain active contact with safety and security counterparts from peer agencies and relevant organisations (UNDSS, INSO, etc.) and represent Malteser International in relevant interagency security coordination meetings in Asia.

Your profile:

  • Local knowledge and network in the countries for Malteser International operations in Asia is an added value (Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand)
  • A formal security qualification or appropriate security management training, with a minimum of 5 years of practical experience in security management, previous working experience with humanitarian organizations is an advantage
  • Understanding of humanitarian principles and their application in humanitarian security risk management
  • Proven experience of risk assessment, incident reporting, incident mapping, information collation and analysis, and security technology as well as written and analytical skills and able to read political and reference maps
  • Ability to use digital tools to streamline management of security processes (policies, SOPs, etc.) and information sharing
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Asia, also to high-risk security environments
  • Professional in English
