Mission and objectives

As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peacebuilding, and climate and disaster resilience. UNDP’s mandate is to end poverty, build democratic governance, rule of law, and inclusive institutions. We advocate for change and connect countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life.

Context

Despite of the significant achievements made by the Regional Administration in terms of providing access to clean water, for instance, the installation of 45 km of water grid improved people’s access to safe water, one of the root causes of the water challenge in the Region is deforestation and land degradation, impacting water source conservation, soil integrity/quality, and biodiversity. Also, the Region’s topography, geology and geomorphology has an impact on the retention and recharging capacity of water as well as growth of the forest. Over 50% of the forested area in the Region is degraded through harmful cultivation methods (slash and burn), uncontrolled grazing, and inefficient method of firewood collection and 37% of total area of the Region has been deforested. A low level of community awareness of the importance of forest conservation is another root cause of the challenge. Deforestation and land degradation also make the communities vulnerable to climate change. Sustainable management of water, natural resources including forest is crucial to providing safe and clean drinking water for communities in both urban and rural areas. Given that there is a higher proportion of the population living in households with a female health disadvantage in Oé-Cusse, and women and children usually bear the responsibility to collect water, this issue also exacerbates gender inequality. It increases the risk of them being the victims of harassment and gender-based violence and reduces the time for productive activities. The last Project phase (2019-2022) started a pilot of developing water catchment areas in two communities in the most remote areas in the region. In only a few months after starting the initiative, the community members have seen a great impact in a short time; access to water increased by almost 50%. This has not only brought impactful results at community level but also the local government is supporting the scaling up of the initiative in areas in need. To continue those efforts, a new Project was signed in June 2022, and which focuses on community-based reforestation, agroforestry and water catchment areas development, among other components. To scale up the initiative and leverage local capacities the Project is enrolled in the Crowdfunded Academy (CFA) initiative. The CFA is a joint initiative between the Innovative Digital Partnerships (BERA-HQ) and Alternative Finance Lab (Innovation Hub-IRH) teams and combines online education, dedicated mentorship, and an end-to-end turnkey toolset and financial operations support that can be customized to raise funds for a wide variety of projects. The funds raised through the CFA will be utilized to create awareness and mobilize the community groups to manage water and forest. This will not only impact directly on the water availability in those areas but also in community members economic activities. It will also contribute to reduce gender inequalities by reducing the time in collecting water for women and children.
