Overview of Team:

 

CHAI has launched an ambitious effort to scale up access to treatment for diarrhea and pneumonia, which combined, kill over 1.5 million children every year. Working with the governments of five high-burden countries and leading global institutions, CHAI’s Essential Medicines team is supporting intensified efforts at both global and country levels to plan, resource, and implement effective interventions for scaling-up access to treatment for these conditions – specifically zinc and ORS for diarrhea, and amoxicillin and oxygen for pneumonia. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Essential Medicines team has expanded its oxygen work to over 25 countries, supporting pandemic response efforts while strengthening long-term oxygen systems planning.

 

Overview of Role:


CHAI is seeking a highly-motivated, resourceful individual to support global oxygen supplier engagement to improve pricing and accessibility in target markets, and to support the development of market-shaping components of end-to-end supply strategies in CHAI’s focal countries. 


We are seeking a highly motivated, entrepreneurial individual with experience in supplier relations and preferably with a background in management consulting or manufacturing, engineering or product design, or related technical disciplines. Candidates for the role must also have an understanding of requirements and challenges with introducing new technology into resource-constrained settings.  This role calls for a travel ~30% of the time on average, mainly for meetings with key suppliers.  

 

The position location is flexible, but limited to CHAI Program Countries, pending leadership approval.

Responsibilities
  • Market Intelligence
    • Maintain an organized, up-to-date knowledge base of the market landscape for key products in the oxygen space
    • Maintain a pricing database from quotes received in prior procurements (among other sources) and analyze pricing trends and influences across different product categories
    • Support targeted efforts (through desk research, data collection, lead generation, etc.) to landscape new products / markets as needed to support overall program strategy and/or country planning / implementation. Examples include:
      • Consumables and equipment suppliers
      • Medical equipment distributors
      • Repair and Maintenance vendors
      • PSA/Liquid oxygen production site database
      • Document effective methods and sources for rapid market landscaping and company research
      • Recommend strategic priorities, objectives, and/or approaches based on an up-to-date knowledge of global and regional market landscapes for key products
  • Supplier Management
    • Maintain a central relationship management database / tool on key manufacturers and distributors in collaboration with the EM Procurement Officer where appropriate
    • Support senior Global Team members with supplier negotiations, communications, and general relationship management functions
    • Coordinate markets and technical support / inputs for country and global procurement exercises in collaboration with EM Procurement Officer and EM Engineering technical specialists
  • Market Shaping Interventions
    • Supporting with company due diligence / research, market position analyses, reference pricing development, sensitivity analysis, etc.
    • Country-specific vendor identification / selection and due diligence
    • Demand forecasting analytical support
    • Demand vs. supply mapping
    • Basic supply model mapping & development (facility selection recommendations and defining equipment requirements)
    • Including packages of recommendations for MoH / stakeholders
    • Cost modelling and options analysis for above
    • Support supplier engagement efforts, incl. negotiations and deal development, with analytics and background desk research
    • Provide input / assistance to country support managers in response to markets-related country team needs / requests
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, or a related discipline preferred
  • Strong quantitative/analysis skills
  • Some familiarity with company / market research
  • Tenacious researcher adept at independently gathering and synthesizing information and using it to generate meaningful insights, particularly with experience in Lower Middle Income Country contexts
  • Able to pull together disparate facts and findings to create a coherent, cohesive understanding of a question / issue / system
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate analytical findings in written, visual, and oral formats
  • Strong creative problem-solving skills
  • Private-sector / business background in medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, health insurance business development, or healthcare consulting preferred
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis, operational analysis, network analysis preferred
