The CTBTO awards a limited number of internships to university students and recent graduates from diverse academic background. Its purpose is to provide a learning and development experience in a field related to the Commission’s activities specialized in various professional fields. Interns usually work on specific practical assignments. Opportunities for internships are available subject to the current needs of the individual divisions within the CTBTO. 

Organizational Background

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna, Austria is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 337 stations worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Organizational Setting

The International Data Centre (IDC) is a technical division that operate stations of the IMS network around the world, as well as receive, collect, process analyze, report on, archive and make the data collected by these stations and IDC products available to Member States. Four different sensor technologies (seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound and radionuclide) are used. 

In order to support the States Signatories in fulfilling their responsibilities under the Treaty, the IDC Division is offering training to station operators and National Data Centre (NDC) staff and technical support to NDCs. This position is located in the International Data Centre Division, Capacity Building and Training Section (CBT).

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the responsible Section Chief, and/or in coordination with the responsible Officer, to:

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist with the definition, review, or enhancement of scope of projects;
  2. In collaboration with assigned project staff, support project planning and execution to achieve project goals;
  3. Assist with organization of workshops, trainings, conferences, as well as technical and expert meetings;
  4. Assist with the preparation of reports including technical editing as required;
  5. Assist with the documentation management, including defining properly naming convention and categorization, collecting and scanning documents and converting them to electronic form, archiving them in a proper format. 
  6. Installation of equipment;
  7. Undertake other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Candidates for an internship must be at least 18 years of age and no more than 35 years of age;
  • At the time of application, the applicant must have completed at least two years of full-time study that will lead to the award of a degree in scientific, engineering or technical field; 
  • Applications may be accepted up to two years after completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. 
     

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Strong analytical skills are essential;
  • Solid organizational skills are required;
  • Knowledge of business reporting and analysis tools is an asset;
  • A very good knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential; advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is an asset;
     

Languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;
  • Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is desirable.
