Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking to recruit a qualified, flexible and enthusiastic professional to work for its non-formal education programme in Epirus as an Education Team Leader.

 

About the job

Under the supervision of the Urban/Integration Manager and with the technical guidance from Education Officer and the Education/Integration Specialist, the Education Team Leader will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation and management of the non-formal education activities in the DRC Homework and Creative Activities Centers (HCAC) in Epirus. The Education Team Leader will manage the design and implementation of quality non-formal education activities for school-aged children (4 to 15) and youth (16-18), provide on-going support to the Education Team and ensure the application of child safeguarding, gender and integration mainstreaming at the HCAC.

 

Responsibilities:       

  • Manage the implementation and design of non-formal education activities for school-aged children (4 to 15) and youth (16-18) in the Homework and Creative Activities Centers (HCAC) as per the NFE programme objectives.
  • Manage education staff in the area of deployment including HCAC teachers and Senior Teachers, Education Cultural Mediators and the Education Social Scientist as well as roving education staff between different project locations.
  • Support the development of learning materials, curricula, positive discipline mechanisms and activity schedules in line with the needs of the beneficiaries.
  • In collaboration with the education team, organize educational visits and joint events with local communities, intercultural education activities and workshops for refugee children and youth.
  • Coordinate outreach and registration activities, and plan the distribution of teaching and learning material according to project budget lines.
  • Promote empathy, compassion and respect for the gender, ethnic, religious, cultural and learning diversity of students.
  • Adhere to DRC’s Code of Conduct and help to create and maintain an environment that prevents child safeguarding violations and promotes the implementation of DRC’s child Safeguarding Policy.
  • Ensure that relevant project data and Means of Verification (e.g. attendance lists, registration forms, lesson plans, distribution lists) are accurately collected and stored, and comply with internal reporting systems.
  • Monitor and record students’ attendance and progress and report any concerns to the Education Officer.
  • Regularly monitor the progress of education activities against project plans, budgets and timelines.
  • Contribute to education needs assessments and support results-based planning.
  • Prepare timely and high-quality progress and donor reports.
  • Maintain effective communication with other DRC departments and external actors.
  • In collaboration with the Social Scientist, liaise with Ministry of Education focal points (RECs) to support the registration and attendance of refugee children to formal education.
  • Contribute to coordination with relevant Government Authorities, Civil Society Organizations and other relevant stakeholders and represent DRC in interagency meetings as required.
  • Identify staff training needs and support in the planning and delivery of capacity building for teachers and Cultural Mediators.
  • Conduct staff Performance and Development appraisals of teachers, Senior Teachers, Education Cultural Mediators & the Education Social Scientist.
  • Develop education project objectives at area-level in collaboration with the Education Team, the Urban Manager, the Education/Integration Specialist and the Education Officer.
  • Identify development opportunities for the DRC Education programme in the area of deployment and support with budgeting and narrative for proposals (where relevant).
  • Contribute to continual improvements in DRC programming and ways of working, through identification and communication of challenges, gaps, recommendations for improvements and lessons learnt.
  • In collaboration with the Education Team, the Urban Manager, the Education/Integration Specialist and the Education Officer, contribute to the development and design of DRC’s education program and activities.
  • In collaboration with DRC Finance and Support Services, ensure the effective implementation of procurement processes in compliance with internal and donor financial procedures.
  • Support the collection of material for DRC’s communications platforms.
  • In day-to-day tasks ensure relevant accountability to internal DRC and Donor policies.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Urban Manager and/or the Area Manager relevant to the achievement of NFE objectives.
  • Any other tasks assigned by the line manager in line with overall response in the area of deployment.

 

About you

 

To be successful in the role we expect you to possess the following:

  • University degree in Social Sciences, Education, or a related field.
  • Training or courses in child protection/safeguarding and NFE will be considered an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written Greek skills will be considered as an advantage.
  • Strong Computer literacy.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in related field with a focus on education programs.
  • At least 1-year experience with local or international NGOs.
  • Prior teaching experience with non-Greek speaking students will be considered an asset.
  • Prior professional experience working with children will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in delivering education trainings and/or mentoring education personnel will be considered an asset.
  • Experience engaging with parents and communities to improve attendance and address students’ needs will be considered an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Strong sense of initiative and self-motivated, with a strong commitment to humanitarian principles
  • Flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn from others.
  • Ability to multitask and cope with multiple competing demands under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a demanding working environment.
